HI Rod!! EQ adjusts the tone on a sound. Think of it this way, on your stereo, you have controls for adjusting the bass, midrange and treble. That's what you can do with EQ. You can use it to filter out specific frequencies for example, if you were recording a Fender Rhodes sound, there may be quite a lot of midrange frequencies in that sound. So, you could use the EQ to filter out some of them which would help the sound of the Fender Rhodes cut through in the mix. Compression is used to boost the overall level of a sound. For example, when some vocalists sing, there can be quite a change in the volume level coming on to the track. Or, if the singer is singing a song that has quite a large vocal range. Some of the sound going down on to the track could be at say, minus 3 or for DB where as other parts of the sound could be at minus 0.2 DB. You could then add a compressor which would bring up the volume of the notes at minus 3 or 4 DB and compress or push down the volume of the hier notes at minus 0.2 DB thus, levelling out the sound on the vocal track. This is a bad freqency, I suppose.
