[ddots-l] Question about Samples/Sampling

Hi guys!
I'm not sure I understand the concept of samples. Is it like using a soft
synth, playing the sounds through your midi keyboard, except that you're
inserting individual sounds? Can you use it in midi, or is it all audio?
