What do you mean by classic Windows, as present on Windows 7 and earlier?
Speaking of that classic color scheme, do you mean that pressing the Windows
key on Windows 7 and possibly earlier allows you to find the start menu, from
which you could verify the programmes you would like to keep or uninstall ,and
select the options to restart or shutdown your machine?
Speaking of Windows 7, you say that it is more vulnerable to the viruses and
malware to attacks than Windows 10, which may mean that DC decided not to
develop it further; for example, making it accessible for the blind on Windows
10, due to the lack of classical color scheme is rather difficult. Those who
trained me with SONAR reiterated me to avoid using Internet, except for sharing
my SONAR projects with them via DropBox, as Windows 7 is vulnerable to viruses
and Microsoft nowadays perhaps does not supports it anymore.
Also, do you mean that a blind person could use SONAR with Win7 and earlier? Or
essentially Win7? Sighted who use SONAR could use Win10. Samplitude and Reaper
may be options for the blind who would like to studio-recording via Win10.
However, the GoodFeel suite can function with any version of Windows and allow
you to import a voice on a Lime file as a midi sequence, then import it to a
MIDI (musical instrument digital interface) track on SONAR for a soft synth to
play to have the perfect rhythm.

Regarding Windows 7. It is like every piece of software. Eventually, it
becomes outdated. That is why Microsoft is no longer supporting Windows7.
Sonar 8.5 and CakeTalking 8.8 were written to be fully compatible with Windows
7. The CakeTalking part of the combination, which is what allows you to use
Sonar with JAWS is 100% dependent on the Windows "Classic" color scheme as well
as specific screen resolutions. The Windows 10 operating system no longer
*has* the Windows "Classic" color scheme, period. Therefore, you can not use
the CakeTalking scripts with Sonar if you upgrade to Windows 10, or start with
Windows 10 on a new computer.
There is really nothing wrong or old fashioned about Windows 7, however, new
methods for bidirectional security have been developed that are not possible
with Windows 7, so perhaps people were telling you not to use the Internet and
Sonar/Windows 7 for that reason. I don't understand anything about it being too
big, but the system is more vulnerable to virus and malware attacks than
Windows 10.
The bottom line is if a blind person wishes to use Sonar and CakeTalking it
has to be done on Windows 7. The develop (our good friend, Bill) and others
involved in the CakeTalking aspect of the combination have decided to not
continue with this product or develop it any further. There are other options
open to everyone. My time is limited by virtue of being as old as I am, so I
desire to stay with the DAW on Windows 7, even though there are probably great
reasons for moving up to Windows 10 and newer products like Reaper and
Samplitude... for which there is ongoing support for the blind community.
In the meantime, I am so happy that Bill and Dancing Dots keeps this mailing
list active so that the many of us that *do* still use Sonar on the Windows 7
and XP platforms have a great place to talk and support each other.
I don't want to confuse you about any of this... and I don't know why you
metnioined the WTH thing.... 😊 I don't think I used it anywhere. 😊

Before I understand your message's main subject, WTH stands for "What the
hell". Normally, it is vulgar. Anyways, I use SONAR (and I had been using it
with that version, since 2013) and those who trained me with this DC's
studio-recording software told me to avoid using Internet as SONAR is big.
To return to your message, you mean that Windows 10 should replace Windows 7
for anything (Internet, Sonaring, GoodFeel, etc.) as Windows 7 is somehow
old-fashioned? It might be its ending point, as you say.

No, Windows 7 is the ending point for Sonar wth Cake Talking. Windows 10
should be the new starting point for anyone moving on with PC work of any kind.
It will be the only secure platform for work with the Internet, and all
developers are relying heavily on system calls to the newer O/S... so Windows 7
is fast becoming unusable for many/most things. Thank goodness, it is still
usable for Sonar/CT... don't get rid of Windows 7 until you don't want to use
Cake Talking agai!

I would be careful about this, but not too careful.
Early on, when Windows 10 was FREE and Microsoft wanted everyone to move to the
new platform, they offered this free upgrade continually and at every possible
junction. Instead of updating your Windows 7, it would *convert* you and
*upgrade* you to Windows10. Obviously, you must not let this happen.
However, it has been a couple/three years since the huge Windows 10 forced
migration. I believe it is over, and they have clearly decided that 10 is the
new starting point... Not only that they have deprecated Windows 7 to being
absolutely unsupported anymore, but I do not think they force an upgrade to
Windows 10 anymore either.
If your notice says upgrades are available and does not mention Windows 10 in
any way... perhaps, it may be telling you that you can get the last available
Windows 7 upgrades. If this is so, that would be a good idea. If it is not so,
it would probably be a bad idea to try it. Since I don't think they will try
to update you to Windows 10 anymore, it may be worthwhile to try. However, it
MUST only be done if you're sure you can do it safely and recover if it doesn't
work, or works badly and leaves your machine not working properly.
I will check my version level of Windows 7, which I think is the last one
released. If you are not at that level, there may be some safe way to get to it
with that upgrade notice you are seeing, and then again, who knows, there may
not be a way. Sounds pretty up in the air, doesn't it? Sorry, but I haven't
checked with Microsoft lately. All I know is my machine does not bother me
about updates or upgrades anymore and has been at a nice, stable static version
7 for quite some time now, and I don't see any messages like you mention. I'll
check my machin's versio, and the MS site and get back to you on this in a few
days.
In the meantime, just keep ignoring the message. 😊
If you don't have the ability to backup the entire C: drive, and that means
with a completely functioning recovery method available, I would go to the
trouble and expense of obtaining such software. This way, if your machine ever
does get corrupted or improperly updated, or whatever, you can recover back to
a stable point. In the future, this is going to become increasingly more and
more difficult to do. There are probably dozens of Backup/Restore/Recovery
programs out there. I use Acronis. They claim to have a functioning
"bare-metal-restore" although I have never relied on it, or even tested it.
This means, if your hard drive completely fails as to be unusable, and you need
to get back to a working machine, their system will allow you to buy a new hard
drive and do that. On Unix/Linux, this would be a dead simple process. Using
Windows, it is not as easy as people might think.

its a dual boot system and on the win10 isde on the taskbar it reads no
