U'll have problems with m-audio cards under windows 7 they have crappy drivers and support. You can't go wrong with focusrite, usb or firewire, just check your firewire chipset -original message- Subject: [ddots-l] Re: MOTU / firewire & external AI compatibilities From: D!J!X! <megamansuperior@xxxxxxxxxxx> Date: 09/11/2010 22:47 In terms of what we were discussing, you do need to still get a motherboard/pc with a Texas Instruments firewire chipset, or buy a separate PCI/PCIE firewire card with a Texas Instruments Chipset. This has been the case for a long time now in the audio world, it has nothing to do with the actual interfaces used. If you check in device manager and you have a texas instrument 1394 controller, then you're fine. If you have something by another brand, then you might want to look into getting a compatible T.I. card. But I'd say try your interface on it first to see and then decide, your performance might be ok with your current chipset. I am just getting back into music as a serious hobbyist and whish to build a home DAW around my new Dell Win 7 64 bit PC. The chat that caught my attention was from earlier e-mail excerpts regarding Texas Instrument chipsets (pasted below). I may have missed an answer thread but wish to buy a good external AI and my PC doesn't appear to have T I firewire hardware. I'm very interested in something like the FocusRite Pro 24 DSP, or perhaps even the MOTU UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid if anyone wishes to comment on the latter. I apologize if I gave any impression there was something undesirable about these brands, if I did it was not intended ;) Here's the 2 excerpts that triggered my concern / confusion; Dancing dots Bill wrote: In general, is firewire support any simpler under Windows7? That is, do you have to take the same precautions when shopping for your Windows7 DAW to make sure that there will not be firewire incompatibilities as we did for XP? It was not enough just to get an XP machine with a firewire port. That machine needed to have the Texas Instruments flavor of firewire or certain firewire devices simply would network. AndD!J!X!" megamansuperior@xxxxxxxxxxx had written I believe this is still the case, the T.I requirement is more to do with the chipset of the actual firewire bus/chipset. It's not driver or software related... > What I'd like to know is which cards which use the Texas instruments firewire chipset are the best, belken or buslink etc. Thanks Wiley Campbell http://www.bigiota.com/Audio/Music.htm -----Original Message----- From: ddots-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:ddots-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of D!J!X! He incorrectly assumed that we were talking about problems with these devices; we started discussing problems with m-audio stuff, but then the subject of the messages were altered, to show the change in topic. At least that's how I understood the message. But to clarify for the original poster, we weren't speaking on how bad saffires and focusrite products were, just the opposite. The only times negative things were said, were about m-audio stuff and Bryan mentioning his experience with about 8 interfaces he tried last month which sucked in term of accessibility. But if you did mean that there have been problems with these interfaces specificly, please, I too (like Phil), would like resources to look at, since I'll be purchasing one soon. A number of us are using Focusrite devices on firewire and I have heard 0 issues with these devices. If there are any then, I would certainly like to know as I recommend them to clients. You will need to be a lot more specific than that E.G, post URL's so that we can all read about it.
