Actually you can get the behringer a/d conveert which has 8 pres on it. It
works quite well for instruments and the like.

if I get an adat preAmp, does it just add one more input, or does it comes with
the remaining 8? Is there anything that would add all 8? Those would be more
for instruments, not so much mics.

Phil replied: well, if you get the Focusrite prees that I suggested then, you
will get 8 pree-amps. With regard to pree-amps, it depends on what you
purchase as to whether you get 1, 2 or, 8 pree-amps. For example, the
Focusrite ones that I suggested have 8. In fact, that package would be
slightly better than the ones on the interface. that's not to say the the ones
on the interface are rubbish because, they are not. Been looking on line at:

  http://www.zzounds.com/item--FOCOCTOPREMKII

and those prees will cost you $499.95. Or, you could look around on EBay and
get the OctoPre which, I have here. The prees that I have would probably cost
you less as they are not in the current range but, they are still good.

there...

Hello guys, I'm wondering if anybody has any suggestions for an audio
interface that works well on the pc and with sonar? I'm looking for good mic
preAmps, 16+ inputs, rock solid drivers under windows 7 x64 and modern computer
hardware. So far I'm leaning towards the FocusRite saffire pro40, but I'm
researching to see if there are any better alternatives before I take the
plunge. I'm looking in the range of 400 to 500 dollars. At this point, I'm not
too concerned with control panel accessibility, the unit itself is what
concerns me. Any suggestions?

Phil replied: the Focusrite Pro 40 will be a great choice. Tim and I have
made the control panel accessible with a combination of .HSC sets and a little
scripting from Tim. The routing on this thing is insane. You can have up to
16 mono or 8 stereo mixes which, you route to the 8 outputs on the back of the
unit. The pree-amps sound great too! Also, you can if you wish, chain a
couple of Pro 40's together. The drivers are rock solid under any OS and as
with any quality interface, you can get the buffer size down to 32.

D! J! X! wrote: Also, the saffire pro40 has 8 physical inputs, and then an
adat port. What would I have to get to add more physical inputs to the saffire
through the adat port? I've heard some mention of such a thing, but forgot the
name and have no idea what is good and how much it'd cost.

Phil replied: you could purchase any pree-amps that use ADAT. focusrite do
some nice ones. Have the OctoPre here and it sounds amazing! Think the
updated version of that is called the OctoPre mkII. Jack Conti over on the
Ddots list, purchased one after I recommended it. He loves his. Things to be
aware of. If you go above 48K then, you will lose 4 ADAT channels. That
wouldn't bother me personally as I track at 24 bit 44.1. Don't see much point
going to 48, as you will have to down sample for CD and you will need a really
good algorithm to do that.
