I'm Sherrie Beaver, and I work here at Deaf Victoria as Policy and Community
Engagement Officer.
In November 2015, Deaf Victoria hosted Let's Talk
About...Mental Health and Deaf People conference.
The conference was very
well attended, and as a result, we received a list of recommendations to
improve the mental health system for deaf and hard of hearing people.
One of the recommendations was to provide specialist training course for
Auslan/English and Deaf interpreters in mental health settings.
Last year, Deaf Victoria applied for the Disability Advocacy Innovation
Fund. We were successful in getting funding to develop a training course for
Auslan/English and Deaf interpreters in mental health settings.
We've partnered with ASLIA Victoria and Monash University for this project..
If you're a Deaf/HoH person who uses Auslan and has a lived experience of
mental health, and have used interpreters in mental health settings such as
counselling, I would love to meet with you for a chat about your experience.
