Let me give an example: I place a jpeg (1475 x 2000, 250 dpi) in Artworks in a A5-sheet. It gives a resolution of 90 dpi. The Artworksfile is 874 kb. Export to pdf gives a file of 1,1 mb. Importing this file 100% in Ovation in a A5-page and saving this document gives a file of ... 75 mb. Even exporting from Artworks as a 300 dpi tiff gives only 12 mb.
I've had a play and the things I thought were wrong seem to be OK. It looks like any JPEG gets turned into a bitmap. However I've not managed to see the 75 times increase you report above.
I'd be interested to see your example 1.1 MB file - private email. It occurs to me that using one of the GhostScript supplied scripts for producing eps might be a better approach. They seem to produce much smaller files than using the epswrite device. This device seems to be a new innovation and not well documented. Maybe a later version of GS will implement it better.
