Secunia (www.secunia.com) does precisely that (for free). I've been using
it for some months now with no hitches. I'm unsure whether the updates it
has notified me about would not have been done automatically by the
relevant bits of software anyway, but it gives a sense of added security.
On the other hand it doesn't lessen the aptness of the subject line
either!
