On the Win side I did enable the invisibles.

Spaces might be hard spaces or tabs. Ellipsis is as Peter just said, odd 
can be three dots can be a single character. You might even have 
characters in there which do not show up.

Windows is nice in that you can mark text, copy, then paste into the 
search icon, but it is not clear what would happen if the odd characters 
that RISC OS and Windows do not agree on were present.

Being aware of the gotcha in these situations I always Copy and Paste into
the Search dialogue.

The RISC OS OvPro was just to re-test the problem, all the work was/is
being done in Win OvPro.

Feel free to put an example document somewhere and I will look at it.
