The situation with Java is that the RISC OS version is Java 1.1, almost the very first version that came out. The latest Java runtime available for download is version 6. The development environment will be either 5 or 6.[snip] I'm not sure if this is possible with Ovation Pro, but Quentin Pain has rewritten Personal Accounts as a Java application. The RISC OS version of Personal Accounts 4 was originally rewritten for Windows as PA 5, but the new version Personal Accountz 6 is provided as Java on a multiplatform CD. Although RISC OS only has a basic Java implementation, is a Java based OP a possible viable option for Windows/Linux, Mac, RISC OS? On the cost side, it is worth noting that Microsoft's new Office 2007 (Home & Student edition) is available for under £90 as a complete office suite, including Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc. No matter what you think of Word, it is the new goalpost. The changes between version 1.1 and version 2 were substantial, most applications having to be re-written. Later versions will have introduced even more changes. It is not possible therefore to have a modern Java version of anything on RISC OS.
Whether a Java implementation of OPro is viable so that versions can run on different platforms such as Windows/Linux/Apple is something that only David Pilling can answer.
Word, the *new* goalpost? Word has been the goalpost ever since it disposed of WordPerfect! :o)
