The problem for me is I don't understand the technical DTP reason why you
need multiple chapers.
1) Page numbering: The prelims of a book are conventionally numbered in
lower-case roman, starting from i, and the body of the book in arabic, starting
from 1. Thus I would usually have one chapter for the prelims and at least one
for the rest of the book.
2) Running headers: In some cases (by no means all) these are unique to each
book chapter, therefore it is easiest to set them in the master page of
multiple Ovation Pro chapters.
3) Page layout: I usually use the same layout for each book chapter, and
therefore try to minimise the number of Ovation Pro chapters. Otherwise it’s a
pain to change the layout subsequently, when the same changes have to be pplies
to every chapter; unfortunately Ovation Pro doesn’t have the concept of a
‘master chapter’ which would make this easier, by changing the layout of the
master chapter, which all actual chapters based on it would automatically
follow. However, the index (or indices) of a book are conventionally in two
columns when the body of the book is in one, and a a separate final Ovation Pro
chapter is the easiest way to achieve this.
Hmm. If your chapters always start on new pages, wouldn't a document with
only a single chapter with sections that start on new pages be in the same
Indeed. In situations in which (2) and (3) above don’t apply, I would use a
maximum of two Ovation Pro chapters, just to allow for the change of page
