I'm not going to do anything with my final result, presume Gavin's is
good enough. But if you want to see my effort let me know.
I've not tried adding chapters - I've never used them. However I assume
the "chaos" arises when dealing with the third chapter, where the
beginning of the document is deleted.
Judging by the example, the illustrations are not embedded in the text, so
deleting say 5 pages of text from the beginning will move the remaining
text 5 pages earlier, but will leave the illustrations where they were.
Then each page of illustrations need to be selected and moved to the
correct new page.
One suggestion which might help though is before doing anything else,
insert in the original text a single line of red text saying "chapter
split here" at the point where you will split. This will make it easy to
identify one end of the delete process in each chapter.
