Scott, glad to hear you and your family are at safe distances from the
fire. The damage it's causing is going to be devastating, however. I've
been watching the videos.
We get some pretty nasty fires here as well. Mexico City is set in the
Valley of Mexico, surrounded by mountains and volcanoes. We're #5 on the
list of the largest cities in the world, and with our metropolitan area,
there's a population of 23 million people (9 million in the city by
itself). That's about 20% of the national population.
Further out there's a lot of rural area, and the government doesn't stop
the illegal activity of clearing farm land by burning it, so there are
always a lot of wildfires and bad air right before spring planting. We
never used to have temperatures higher than 26-27º (78-79), but now we're
getting up in the 30ºs along with a lot more humidity. I'm worried about
what the higher temperatures are going to do to the wildfires.
BTW, I'm reading one of the best books I've ever read in my life on climate
stuff right now. Kim Stanely Robinson, a sci-fi writer, or cli-fi as
they're now saying, wrote an incredible novel last year, *The Ministry for
the Future*. I highly recommend it. The Rolling Stone had a great interview
with the author last December:

We are safe, about 45km away from where the fire is. We're also in the
middle of suburbs several kilometres from any natural vegetation. Rory and
Jessica live in the city near the mountain but round the other side from
where this fire is, and I think far enough from the edge of vegetation to
be okay if there's fire on that side.
