Yeah, last summer that was some of the worst smoke I've ever seen, and
I've *literally
*fought forest fires as a firefighter in my youth. Last summer was worse
than being AT any fire I've ever been at, and I've been at some.

Anyway, I saw that Steve posted the thing about the current fires in his
area, and one person replied to "Scott", and I thought "*OK, that's just
innocent mistyping*" but then when *two *people called Steve by my name it
turned into time to make fun of people.  :-)

I mean, it's not like I *wouldn't* write about fires around here.  I think
I did.  But credit\commiseration should go where it's due.  Stuff about
Cape Town *usually *won't involve me directly, although to be fair
nothing's impossible*.

Scott

* That's not true.  Some things *are *impossible.  It's not really a very
good general statement, to be honest.

Perhaps Scott you could accept it as belated concern for your wellbeing
during the Oregon wildfires last year which, I believe, was one of the
worst on record. Or advanced concern for your safety during the next wild
fire season. I don't know how close you live to those areas.

Thank you all very much for your well wishes!

You will be happy to note that I am indeed safe and far from the fires.
That's partially because I don't live in South Africa, where those fires
are, but instead in Oregon, which according to Google is roughly 10,245
miles away from them.  That's not really an exact figure, since my search
was "*distance from oregon to south africa*", which admittedly left out
some details like the addresses of the two points, but that's the number
that popped up, along with a little graphic showing that that is pretty
much "as the crow flies" if crows flew both transatlantically and
transhemispherically, and it's good enough for me.

The Scott in South Africa is technically named Steve.

:-)

Good lord Scott! Stay safe!

We went through the terrible fire seasons the last couple years and it
looks like this will be another one. My wife and I get involved in large
animal evacuation efforts. The only good news in all this is that last year
we bought a new truck and trailer for the job. (Ford F-350 Flatbed Crew
Cab, in case anyone’s wondering.)

Even when not directly threatened by the fire itself, the air quality
issues can be really horrible. We got a Purple Air monitor and I’m thinking
of getting a second one this year for INSIDE the house.

Masks are a help, but the smoke and soot and poisons still get in your
eyes.

Keep well, all!

Darius

Scott, glad to hear you and your family are at safe distances from the
fire. The damage it's causing is going to be devastating, however. I've
been watching the videos.

We get some pretty nasty fires here as well. Mexico City is set in the
Valley of Mexico, surrounded by mountains and volcanoes. We're #5 on the
list of the largest cities in the world, and with our metropolitan area,
there's a population of 23 million people (9 million in the city by
itself). That's about 20% of the national population.

Further out there's a lot of rural area, and the government doesn't stop
the illegal activity of clearing farm land by burning it, so there are
always a lot of wildfires and bad air right before spring planting. We
never used to have temperatures higher than 26-27º (78-79), but now we're
getting up in the 30ºs along with a lot more humidity. I'm worried about
what the higher temperatures are going to do to the wildfires.

BTW, I'm reading one of the best books I've ever read in my life on
climate stuff right now. Kim Stanely Robinson, a sci-fi writer, or cli-fi
as they're now saying, wrote an incredible novel last year, *The
Ministry for the Future*. I highly recommend it. The Rolling Stone had a
great interview with the author last December:

Keep safe,

Jeanne

We are safe, about 45km away from where the fire is. We're also in the
middle of suburbs several kilometres from any natural vegetation. Rory and
Jessica live in the city near the mountain but round the other side from
where this fire is, and I think far enough from the edge of vegetation to
be okay if there's fire on that side.
