New Jersey State Film Festival at Cape May Presents Dance On Camera
November 21-23, 2008
Dancer/Filmmaker Susannah Newman curated Dance on Camera for the New Jersey
State
Film Festival, November 21-23, 2008, marking the second year of partnership
between
Dance Films Association (DFA) and the Cape May New Jersey State Film Society.
The
oldest dance film festival in the world, Dance Films Association's 36th Annual
Dance
on Camera Festival co-sponsored by the Film Society of Lincoln Center toured to
over 50 venues in 2008. Six selections from five countries will be included in
the New Jersey State Film Festival.
A collection of shorts (including FLYING LESSON shown above) will be shown along
with AFRICAN DANCE: SAND, DRUM, AND SHOSTAKOVICH by filmmakers Ken Glazebrook
and
Alla Kovgan. A fiscal sponsored project of DFA, this thrilling documentary
explores
African contemporary dance through eight modern dance companies from Africa,
Europe
and Canada that participated in the Festival International de Nouvelle Danse in
Montreal, Canada in 1999. Interviews, including those with dance historians
Yacouba
Konate and Alponse Tierou, add insight to beautifully-photographed performances.
What emerges is a fascinating diversity of contemporary African dance themes
and
styles. Exploring the interactions between tradition and modernism, the
consequences
of colonization and urbanization, the self-expression of women through dance,
and
the roles of masculinity and family relationships, the film is a unique source
of
information and inspiration for dancers, dance historians, choreographers,
critics,
as well as those interested in African culture, past and present.

Dance Films Association, Inc. is a non-profit, tax-exempt, member-supported
service
organization. DFA promotes excellence in dance on camera and public awareness
of
the art form through festivals, screenings, publications, grants, and workshops.
Susan Braun founded the organization in 1956 after a futile search for films on
her favorite dancer, Isadora Duncan. Braun devoted her life to finding,
showcasing,
preserving and championing dance films and videos until her death in 1995.
These programs are made possible in part with the support from the New York
City's
Department of Cultural Affairs, National Endowment for the Arts, New York State
Council on the Arts, Capezio-Ballet Makers Foundation, The Howard Gilman
Foundation,
the members of DFA, and the Susan Braun Trust. DFA is a founding member of MAD,
Media and Dance network of over 35 dance film festivals around the world.
