Celebrated Innovator Reflects on Career
Saturday, March 28, 7:00 PM
Anthology Film Archives
32 Second Avenue
New York, NY 10003
(212) 505-5181
In 1964, celebrated filmmaker Jonas Mekas wrote in the Village Voice, "What I
saw
at
Judson Church last Wednesday [Summers's FANTASTIC GARDENS] was by far
the most successful and most ambitious attempt to use the many possible
combinations of film and live action to create an aesthetic experience."
Summers describes Intermedia as "like a rainbow, a phenomenon requiring two
elements
to make a third." Anthology's evening, ELAINE SUMMERS: MAKING RAINBOWS,
presents
selections from her body of work spanning the 1960's-1980's, reinterpreted for
the
theater space at Anthology. The event combines film, live performance, and
improvisation.

About Elaine Summers
Elaine Summers came to New York in the 1950's and became part of Bob Dunn's
dance
composition workshop (which later became Judson Dance Theater). Like her
colleagues
at Judson, Summers experimented with pedestrian movement and chance procedures,
but also expanded her inquiry to experimental film, visual art, and body work.
In 1964, she presented her own Intermedia event, "Fantastic Gardens," in which
she
projected film over the entire space, located the audience in different multiple
places, and featured dancers working from improvisational scores, sharing the
space
with sculpture.
Summers continues to create Intermedia experiences, her career pushing the
boundaries
of dance, film, visual art, and technology. In the 1980's, she began
incorporating
the sky into her work, using
balloons, planes, and large sky-objects created by artist Otto Piene.
Currently,
she maintains Skytime

an experiential approach to understanding body/mind connections in relation to
the
fundamentals of human movement. Elaine Summers has been a beloved supporter of
DFA, lending her enthusiasm and knowledge for decades.
