So, circular polarization can be achieved by building a patch with two
resonance frequencies in the orthogonal directions and using the antenna
right in between the two resonances at f0.
Ahhh, that's a start to the grokking...
I still need to get my FEM EM simulation skill badge. If anyone has
experience with that I'd love some guidance.

To my disappointment none of my books were useful on this point. I
remember reading a detailed explanation of them somewhere, but I'm not
finding it now. This link seems like a pretty good start though.
