then a webmail or MAPI user will connect directly to the MTA and outgoing email will be sent via SMTP directly to the Internet and never pass through ASSP.

Where on a web browser do you configure the sending SMTP server?

Well when I configure a webmail system it asks where is your mail server and you point it to ASSP that then proxies and sends to the mail server for sending.
