Hi Ed, hope all is well!
Please NO, not Bob Dylan... have always felt that Mr. Zimmerman is
super-duper overrated as a lyricist/songwriter. Dylan (in my not so humble
opinion) seems to have been propped up and placed on a holier than thou
pedestal mainly by media types which in turn the Status Quo (fans/record
buying public) have bought into hook line and stinker...
Was thinkin' more in terms of others within the folk roots genre
who conveyed their message through the artistry of word, such as Leadbelly,
Robert Pete Williams, Hank Williams, Big Joe Williams, Will Shade (Memphis
Jug Band), Billy Joe Shaver, Chatmon Bros. (Mississippi Sheiks), Merle
Haggard, Tom Waits, Uncle Dave Macon, Jimmie Rogers (the singing Brakeman),
Tommy Johnson, Blind Willie Johnson, Robert Johnson, Rice (Sonny Boy 2)
Miller, John Lee (Sonny Boy 1) Williamson, Waylon Jennings, etc, etc,
etc... maybe I've had it all ASS backwards all these years in feeling that
music, especially roots, was about the telling of a story.
Today, somewhere out there on the lost highway the key element to
song "the story" seems sadly to have fallen by the wayside, compromised in
turn by the slicker approach of snot nosed 6 string slingers... okay, and
mid-life crisis wahoo's too!
I'm not saying that one shouldn't be proficient on his/her
instrument of choice, this just shouldn't overshadow or outweigh the poetry
(or whatever one chooses to call it) itself, without the story firmly (and
in some cases even, tongue in cheek) intact, roots blues suffers greatly.
Oh the times they are a changin'... hey, wasn't that A Bobby D.
ditty?
yesssireee Bob, and pretty light in the loafers to boot!

HEY BILL, Marcus King is a young musician with a lot of potential.
I don't think we have to compare his songwriting skills to Bob Dylan - at
this point.

I was impressed with the guitar intro then
pleasantly surprised with the soulful vocal (evoking BB King and
Albert Collins). Thanks Bunny!
