      Issue 14: 04.21.2002
Over the weekend, I purchased the Pimsleur Quick & Simple German language
tapes as I've always had a strong interest in learning German. The
twenty-dollar, eight-lesson set is an introduction to the German language meant
to give people a preview of the language before buying the full $345 set. There
are three sets for each language, each costing $345 from Pimsleur or about $250
on Amazon.

In a few weeks, I should understand a little German and understand the
basic concept of the language. I want to pick up German for Dummies after I
learn how to converse in German so I can learn how to read and write in German.
But, what I must do during the summer is get Pimsleur Quick & Simple Spanish
and Spanish for Dummies. I have to take Spanish classes next year, and because
I'm so horrible when it comes to learning Spanish, I need a head-start.

That brings me to some more news. I registered for the IB program at the
Deerfield Beach High School this week. Besides the usual required
courses--English, P.E. (one semester; I can't stand P.E.!), etc.--I chose
"Intro. Journalism 1" as my elective, "Spanish 1" (either that, French, or
Japanese and since many of my friends are taking Spanish or speak it, they can
tutor me). If I pass the Geometry credit-by-exam this year, I get to take an
extra elective or AP Statistics next year. In the IB program, we take two math
courses per year, so I'll take Algebra II/Trigonometry, and if I pass the
Geometry credit-by-exam, I can AP Statistics or another elective (I chose
Debate as my elective choice instead of Statistics); otherwise, I have to take
Geometry, again, and that would be a major bummer.

I may try to switch to AP Statistics (because my family recommended it
and my friends are taking it, so it seems like a good move), or I might take it
in a later year. They're so much freedom! High school rocks!

I've figured out that working on the computer in candlelight and
listening to Mozart at night is very relaxing and tranquil. It makes it much
easier to get to sleep because I'm in a very calm and relaxed mood when I get
into bed, do my mind isn't racing along at the speed of light. It helps with
headaches, too.

For some odd reason, ever since I read Interview With the Vampire, I've
been longing to learn how to play the piano or keyboard, so I can play Mozart,
Bach, or Beethoven. It's amazing how books and movies (yes, I've watched the
Interview With the Vampire on TBS several times this month) affect me.

If you'll excuse me, I'm going to go watch Warning: Parental Advisory on
VH1. Until next Sunday, see you later, and enjoy this issue of The Crapshoot.

      Project Gutenburg

Project Gutenburg is project in-progress that aims at making all books
available via computers. Currently, they can only put material where the
copyright is up (i.e. all works published before 1923). You can download books
such as those written by Edgar Allen Poe and William Shakespeare. It's great
resource for anyone and everyone.

      Rammstein

Okay, you got me--I'm a Rammstein fan. But who couldn't crave those hard
guitar ryffs, killer drums, and those deep German vocals that mix so well to
create the sound we know as Rammstein? Rammstein has managed to impress rock
fans everywhere...without speaking a word of English!

      The Raging Quiet-Sherryl Jordan

The Ragin Quiet is the story of a young widow who takes in a local child
who is thought to have been possessed by the devil during the times of lords
and feudalism. The girl, Marnie, quickly finds out he is deth and tries to
teach the boy, Raven, to use hand signals to communicate. I recommend this book
highly.

Okay, I admit it--I'm a little partial to penguins because of Linux. For
penguin fans out there or anyone who's interested, this web cam's for you. You
can view penguins in the "Polar World exhibit the Montreal Biodome in Montreal,
Quebec."
