ADJUNCT POVERTYHow CUNY runs on itWhat it means for studentsWhat the union
contract struggle is & where it’s going

Most CUNY classes are taught by “adjunct” faculty, who get poverty wages,
often less than $100 per student per semester, and no job security. For
students, tuition keeps going up; getting an education seems harder all the
time. Meanwhile, CUNY pays the Chancellor a $670,000 salary and $19,500 monthly
rent.Faculty and staff have gone without a new union contract for five years,
and without a raise for six. The union has announced it will hold a “strike
authorization vote.” New York State’s blatantly anti-worker Taylor Law says it
is “illegal” for teachers to exercise their basic right to withhold their
labor. Students and adjuncts need to work together to face growing problems at
CUNY. For this to happen, a clear understanding of the situation is crucial. So
are the debates among adjunct activists over a fighting strategy to face
this.CUNY Contingents Unite/Hunter (a group of adjuncts and other “contingent”
employees that works within the union but is not part of its official
structure) is sponsoring this forum together with the Internationalist Club. We
invite students, adjuncts, Continuing Ed, HEOs, CLTs, “full-time” faculty and
others to come join the discussion. For more information:
