Several rallies and forums are coming up on how and when to reopen the
schools. For most of the country where community spreading is intense right
now, this is far from an immediate question. In New York City which has an
infection rate hovering around 1 per cent, described as “spreading in a
slow and controlled” manner, the mayor, schools chancellor and governor are
weighing in on school reopenings in September. Mayor de Blasio has proposed
a “hybrid” model in which students will go to school part of the week, and
the rest of the week are to take classes remotely.
Notably, nobody has consulted the people who actually work in the schools.
This is a time when the CSEW call for teacher-student-parent-worker control
of schools is posed sharply as never before.
We had discussion of this at the CSEW meeting on Sunday. Now the issue is
immediately posed. Here are some slogans we came up with for the rallies.
