Ravi Ragbir was granted a temporary stay of deportation today, hours before
he was to be deported. The stay will last until until Mid March, while a
federal court considers a new lawsuit. Ravi is executive director of the
New Sanctuary Coalition.
New Sanctuary Coalition announced: "UPDATE: Ravi received a temporary
stay of deportation.... More than ever, we need you to join the New
Sanctuary Coalition and our allies for an emergency rally to show
solidarity with Ravi and all immigrants at 9am Saturday, February 10th in
Foley Square <https://www.facebook.com/events/148117135896982>.
Their statement continued, " We can't back down*. * This moment is urgent.
This is bigger than any one case. ICE is escalating its attack on
immigrants, and only our movement can stop them "
*The Internationalist Group is urging all of our supporters and friends to
come out to the rally on Saturday, and be in Foley Square by 8:15. *
The stay came as a result of a new lawsuit based on "freedom of speech"
filed Wednesday by the New Sanctuary Coalition and other immigrant rights
It argued that Ravi is being targeted by ICE because he is an activist and
a spokesman for the movement against deportations. They noted the
deportation of Jean Montrevil, a co-founder of the New Sanctuary Coalition
who was deported on January 16 by ICE and sent to Haiti. The IG was present
at the protest the day afer Montrevil was arrested.
