Subject: [cs_edworkers] Our next meeting
Hello CSEW members,
It is time for our next meeting! We would be gathering at our usual place,
as previously - on Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Please respond with your
availability and any issues for the agenda.
So far, we have these points for the agenda and other issues for discussion
from Marjorie:
1. Marxism and Education.
We have some important articles coming up, and I'd like to have a preliminary
but detailed discussion on an article list, deadlines, management of, etc
2. Our Current Work in our education locales; mainly our work on our
immigration committees, but also including San's PSC campaign, the situation
with the MORE opposition in UFT, hospital workers...
3. Outreach Mark rightly is pushing us to extend our reach. This is a
tough one since practically every left liberal outfit with a web site hates
us. But we need to break through. I am talking with Fred about a FB page,
which is problematic, because one cannot apparently control the 'comment"
section, and the page could quickly get infested with right-wing
flame-agents. I also want to talk to Will about the Hunter immigrant
solidarity FB page and how they deal with that.
Below is a preliminary look at Marxism and Education. Please take the time
to look at this, so we can have a useful discussion at the mtg.
Thanks,
Marjorie
M&E proposed article list:
--- Lead article should be immigration defense and education workers. Almost
all the left and teacher activists are calling on their institutions to
defend immigrants while we are saying it is up to teachers, students, parents
and workers. Because those institutions (schools, universities, etc)
represent the capitalist state which is doing the deporting.
Most glaring, University of California chancellor is Janet Nepolitano, the
former head of Department of Homeland Security.
This article could serve as an introduction to pieces on our work on the
immigrant committees that we have initiated.
-- Interview with Vera on Vygotsky. Mark L is working on this transcription.
Vygotsky and Freire being two towering figures in progressive education
that new teachers are extremely interested in. (I'm not new, but I am very
interested. We are really lucky to have Vera's remarks on this.
-- We have the Betsy DeVos leaflet, and several union motions on immigrant
defense already on Keep ICE out of the Schools, and Medical Deportations.
--Alberto (cmd in Mexico) has a very interesting piece on indigenous
education, if we have room. Could have a companion piece on Oaxaca teachers.
--For several years I have wanted us to publish Charlie's piece on Engels,
which is really important, but I know he doesn't want to publish for reasons
that are completely understandable, but...
Please let me know which Saturday or Sunday will be good for you and any
suggestions for the agenda.
Many thanks!
Irina
