The Washington Post dubs Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez "the newest star of the
Democratic Party" in a news story today, and in the opinion piece linked below
accurately states that the DSA member who won an upset primary victory "just
did the Democrats a big favor." Similarly, the New York Times editorial board
greeted her win with rapturous praise yesterday. Why? To ask the question is to
answer it.
While music to the ears of many, such praise from these two house organs of
U.S. imperialism reflects the political-social function that this and similar
campaigns fulfill. And what is that? They say it rather clearly. Renovating the
image of the oldest and most experienced capitalist-imperialist party in the
world.
Yet in major hallelujah mode, most of what passes for a left in the U.S. basks
in such "mainstream" media approval for what it, too, hails as a victory, big
step forward, etc. Wanting to have it both ways, though, they wax indignant at
the simple observation that, yet again, they are helping bind the exploited and
oppressed to the parties, institutions, decrepit political framework and
hideous system of the ruling class. This is some kind of "socialism"? No way.
Yet despite Trotsky's insistence that those who genuinely want to be Marxists
must "learn to read, learn to think" politically, most of the thinking on the
"left" is about how to hail, tail and "theorize" this, sharing their enthusiasm
with the Washington Post, New York Times et al.
