I originally wrote the piece in 2007 for a CUNY Grad Center newsletter on Latin
American studies. It is being republished by H-LatAm now, slightly revised, in
light of the recent repressive moves against the Bolivian Miners Archive. Those
recent developments will be addressed in the second part, to be published later
this month.
(Cannon biographer Bryan Palmer has also asked me to do a related but somewhat
different piece on repressive moves against the Archive, for the Canadian labor
history journal Labour/Le Travail.)
