The strikers have decided to picket at 126TH STREET and Broadway. It’s
raining a little but spirits are high.

Subject: Re: Correction Re: Columbia University strike
It's great that people are going and plan to continue going to the Columbia
strike pickets. I hope increasing numbers will do so, and that in addition to
participation by members individually and in groups, our union can organize a
large contingent as soon as possible. I hope other unions will do so as well. A
win in this strike would, among other things, really encourage academic
employees -- and others -- in a lot of places, in terms of organizing,
unionizing and challenging prevailing conditions. And it would help us quite a
bit at CUNY!
At yesterday's strike picket at Columbia's medical center in Washington
Heights, morale continued to be very high. PSC members and CUNY students were
greeted very warmly. Part of the importance of solidarity efforts is that the
Columbia administration is trying to isolate and wear down the strikers.
Strikers report that the administration sent out an email demanding that
individuals register via an online system to indicate whether or not they are
on strike and stating that it has begun docking pay. The striking union
(GWC-UAW Local 2110) characterizes this as another example of Columbia "trying
to intimidate us out of striking"
(columbiagradunion.org/2021/03/18/more-on-the-pay-docking-system/<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcolumbiagradunion.org%2F2021%2F03%2F18%2Fmore-on-the-pay-docking-system%2F&data=04%7C01%7C%7C1f3043a57bf146d2839608d8ea177460%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637516733745445751%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=lckEHkMOHtxgq500hPNS0M%2BhCkn8kMJJUK8N4py8K0A%3D&reserved=0>).
Some of us will be at the picket line today, which will be held at Columbia's
Manhattanville unit, 129th St & Broadway. Then tomorrow (Friday), the strikers
will be picketing the main Columbia campus, at 116th & Broadway. The pickets
are held from 10 AM to 2 PM. (The suggestion was raised by Andrea that PSCers
may want to concentrate at 12 noon.) The union plans to continue rotating
between different Columbia units in its pickets next week, which are announced
on its site:
https://columbiagradunion.org/<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcolumbiagradunion.org%2F&data=04%7C01%7C%7C1f3043a57bf146d2839608d8ea177460%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637516733745445751%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=HmUgvVqZMdmKhf2rUDrd5BEjXSla9%2FJmO9rFjQDzwVg%3D&reserved=0>
In terms of signs, as Andrea and Glenn have noted, it is great to have the
printed PSC solidarity signs -- and also hand-written ones if you'd like to,
specifically referencing the Columbia strike. Yesterday a couple of us brought
some markers and blank posterboard, and I plan to do so today as well; I
imagine others are doing so as well, so people can make their own placards.
(The strikers also have very nice strike-support items that they give out.)
Solidarity,
Sándor

Thank you, you three. I went to their picket a few years back and was the only
one from our union, except a photographer. Luckily I had a PSC sign. Solidarity
is always appreciated.

plague and emotions shared by all.

I am going to try to go on Friday 12-2. Will there be PSC solidarity signs?
