This is actually kind of a big deal.

We initiated this demand three years ago through a major CCU campaign. The fact 
that $7K has been formally adopted by the PSC as a bargaining demand goes back 
to that campaign and us winning enthusiastic endorsement for the demand from 
the international Coalition of Contingent Academic Labor conference in August 
2014. Of course, for the union to organize the kind of mobilization needed to 
win it is another matter. That, together with the history of the demand, is

Last night the union’s elected delegates overwhelmingly approved a new 
bargaining agenda. I will now send a formal request to CUNY management to begin 
the next round of collective bargaining. The PSC is ready to begin immediately, 
and we will call on CUNY to start before the end of our current contract on 
November 30.

case that is designed to destroy the strength of public-sector unions like the

5% a year, and includes an important new demand for an increase in adjunct pay 
to $7,000 per course. The time for that demand has come. Everyone who works at 
CUNY loses when anyone at CUNY can be paid substandard wages. It is in the 
interest of all faculty and staff to demand that major additional funding be 
added to our contract to end the gross underpayment of adjuncts.

You will also see new demands to protect academic freedom and other rights in 
online teaching, to address the needs of department chairs, college laboratory 
technicians, graduate employees, higher education officers and others. You will 
find a strategic agenda for professional staff as well as faculty.
