Huge databases, which contain huge amounts of information on individual
citizens, which are not anonymised locally, will be of huge attraction
to those organisations which deal in private information, from both
state actors to private companies and criminals...as can be seen from
the above example when Australia went on line with its Census.
There really are going to have to be well thought out safeguards for the
rights to privacy of the citizen, like anonymising the information as it
is collected and then sent off over the internet, to some huge storage
facility, where it will be made available to those with authority to do
so; or as when their private information falls into the hands of those
who aren't supposed to have it, or is shared amongst more and more
people and organisations.
