Interesting case...Couple of chaps decide to do up old Dell computers
and sell them. They all had XP or Win 7 on them. They provided copies
of Windows Restore Discs which contains tools to fix faults, including
wiping storage clean and restoring Windows. These discs are given out
for free by manufacturers and software company. They printed 28,000 of
them and gave them to customers who bought the computers.
They pleaded guilty and got done for copyright fraud to the extent of
millions and were given prison sentences of 15 months. An appeal has now
been lodged against sentence, arguing that the copy discs were not worth
that much so the fraud wasn't the amount which had been suggested.
Each Dell computer already had Windows on it, and the OS number was
available, so it wasn't as if a new copy of Windows was being placed on
the computer, just fixing and restoration of an already registered
Operating System via a free tool....
We shall see what happens on appeal.
