These are okay for personal affairs of little importance but will not
do for serious matters, say, for tax avoidance, kiddie porn, spying,
stealing, fraud, political dissent, or any criminal or suspected-criminal
activity. All these services will comply with lawful (and covert) demand
for access to email content and meta-data.

It is common business, government, institutional and personal
practice to exaggerate threat and security to induce dependence on
authority. Common practice as well to betray those induced to
trust authoritative security.

This is not cynicism merely observation of how authoritatives
behave to protect their investment and advance their offerings.

For example, no nation will permit use of encryption which it
cannot break but all will promote products that appear to
be trustworthy and strictly ban those which are not accessible
to national authority by hook or crook. This is simple protection
policy, nothing bizarre or unexpected about it.

Trustworthy encryption products are exactly what cryptanalysts
want to be adopted and work hard to get them widely used.

This is applicable to anonymizing products and initiatives as
well.

Sec experts advise to not bother seeking protection national
authorities, that wil not happen. But that the public will be
fed products and services to promise such protection, there
is a very long history of doing that. The basis of fundamentalism
forever, to be assured there is safety by adopting faith
in authority -- meaning authoritative advertising, propaganda,
preaching, philosophizing. whispering "we can get it for
you on the black market."
that will appear in public.
