The Queensland Science Contest - Registrations open until the 9th of October!
As we approach the end of term 3, be sure to check out all of our upcoming PD
events; like the 'Enhancing Science Practices' on the 16th of October.
Also, don't forget to encourage your students to continue working on their
entries into the 64th Queensland Science Contest; registration is open until
the 9th of October. Judges for all categories and divisions of the Science
Contest are also wanted on October 14th.

September 13, 9:00am - 2:00pm
Queensland STEM Education Network invites Guidance Officers, Science and
Mathematics Heads of Department to join our upcoming professional development
opportunity on Careers in STEM. There will a panel discussion from industry
practitioners, tours of STEM industries at Brisbane Technology Park, 8 Mile
Plains, and STEM career opportunities in the defence force. Morning tea and
lunch will be supplied and a certificate for CPD will be provided. Limited

64th Queensland Science Contest

The Queensland Science Contest is an opportunity for Queensland students from
Prep to Grade 12 to have their scientific work judged for awards and prizes. It
is currently in its 64th year!. Registrations open until 9 October. Start
students on their projects now!
Judges for all categories and divisions of the Science Contest are also wanted

STAQ Enhancing Science Practices (ESP)
16th October for teachers & repeated on 13th November for HODs/Lab Techs 2017
Prepare yourself for the compulsory practicals in the new Science Curriculum
with the SPARQed teachers in their PC-2 Laboratory and work your way through a
series of “hands on” experiments.

The annual Senior Science and Maths Conference will be hosted by The
University of Queensland in conjunction with STAQ and QAMT for senior secondary
science and maths teachers as well as Science Operations Officers (SOOs). The
November 23rd will focus on Science and the November 24th will focus on
mathematics - so mark these dates in your calendar. If you are interested in
this event and would like to receive updates on this conference, complete

National Science Week is over for another year!! ASTA would love to know what

2018 STEM X ACADEMY - Applications Open Soon

7th-12th January 2018 Academy is held
Applications for the 2018 STEM X Academy will close on 14 September.
Participants will undertake work with CSIRO and Questacon on a hands-on STEM
pedagogy-based program designed to provide practical resources and ideas to
take back to the classroom and share with colleagues. They will meet with
scientists, learn about their research and develop a suite of activities to use
Seventy places are available to primary and secondary teachers of science. The
five day program will be held in Canberra from 7-12 January 2018. Successful
applicants will be asked to make a one-off contribution of $485 towards costs.
This contribution will cover flights to and from Canberra and the participant's
closest capital city, as well as accomodation, meals, transport and venue entry
fees associated with the program. Scholarships are also available to offset all
Overseas Volunteer Service Trips
Projects Abroad manages educational service trips for students in years 10 and
11 as well as for school leavers. For students hoping for a career in medicine
there is a hospital experience placement in Nepal while other students might
find the scientific content of Conservation
such as those in Himalayan National Parks of particular interest.

2018 World Science Festival Brisbane Teacher Preview Evening

This free event will showcase exclusive details of the 2018 lifelong learning
program and will include presentations from key festival team members. In 2018
the festival will include a range of curriculum linked, educational programs
which underpin Queensland Museum’s commitment to support and foster
STEM-literacy, and to inspire and enrich lifelong learning for all.

Association of Computational and Mathematical Modeling (AoCMM) Competition
September 27th to October 10th
AoCMM is a math modeling competition held towards the end of every year. The
team will be given 14 days to research two real world problems.
Teams will be given specific topics to conduct independent research which
they'll present in the form of an organised research paper. Last year, 118
teams from 24 different countries participated.
National Science Teachers Summer School

Operating for over ten years, the NYSF National Science Teachers Summer School
(NSTSS) is a week-long professional development program that aims to re-ignite
the participant teachers’ passion for science, engage them in a professional
dialogue about teaching and learning, and to explore ways of engaging students
in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
ChangeMakeHer Australia: 'EmpowHer' Conference

At the secondary level, Year 11 students Claire Galvin and Anna Hardy and Year
12 students Eliza Dalziel and Georgia Hannah from St Monica’s College in Cairns
won the University of Sydney Sleek Geeks Science Eureka Prize for Secondary
students. Their film, Manure You
shares the important work dung beetles do for our soil and we would like to
send a big congratulations to them and their school.
Holiday Robotics Workshops at the University of Queensland
Introduction to Robotics - 26th September 2017
the exciting world of robotics by building and programming your own robot! In
this workshop, students will learn how to build their own robot using the Lego
Advanced Robotics and Artificial Intelligence - 27th September 2017
Students will work with intelligent robotic systems and advanced programming
concepts with the goal of winning the ‘survival of the fittest’ challenge. Read

and UQ invite girls in year 7 - year 12 to attend a full-day Robotics Workshop
at UQ’s St Lucia campus.
Year 10 Maths Camp at the University of Queensland
A five-day program at UQ’s St Lucia campus for students starting Grade 11
Maths B and Maths C in 2018 who have a strong interest in mathematics. Cost is
$250 for the non-residential program which includes morning tea and lunch.
Applications close 9am, Monday 20 November and first round offers sent out on
Monday 27 November.
