They're unlocked from the start. They're playable.

*LOL* As if restrictions haven't been placed on other fighting games in the
past when it was necessary. Gtfo with that logic. If something isn't ideally
suited to the meta of a game, should it really be retained? I mean, if you've
taken the time to test shit and to see if it's feasible or not (which we have),
should you really still include it by virtue of the fact that it's there? By
the way, plane-switching would work well in a Tag or 4-player format; it's just
not suited to 1 v 1. But I've already said that...
I've embraced it for the amazing game it is. Good games deserve to be played. I
haven't experienced anything in the game thus far for me to label it kuk. You
want your baloney tech? It's in there. You want to play a more honest style?
It's in there. I can also accept that not everyone is going to have the same
experience. That applies to most fighting games.

Plane-switching isn't ideal for 1 v 1. But I've already said that and explained
why it's not ideal. That was something I identified early on already. No plane
switching? No problem. Plays like a conventional 2D fighter with the two
primary exceptions being that you use a button to block and you aren't
restricted to facing in a single direction when moving around. It's different,
but it works.
Movement is GODLIKE in Yu Yu. It's a pity you never took the time to explore
it. Ah, I forgot; you only play Younger Toguro... the slowest character in the
game. There are plenty of other characters in the game with more innovative
movement than I've seen in most current-gen titles.

more people played it, they also wouldn't have any issues with the lack of a

I suspect that you were on the receiving end of the 'running away' and it irked
you to the point that you decided that the timer was to blame. Trust me, it's
not. Yu Yu isn't about two characters being on opposite ends of the screen all
the time. Save for a select few characters (Sensui being one of them as he's a
zoner), the game just isn't played that way. Eliminate the plane-switching and
you've got a very nice, simple, slightly unconventional 2D fighter on your
hands.

If the game had a timer, the opponent would still have to approach you if you
had a life lead. He'd just feel more pressured to do so with the seconds
winding down spelling his potentially inevitable doom.
Alternatively, seeing as how it's such a big deal and wholly incomprehensible
to play a game of this nature competitively without a timer, you could just
rage quit when your opponent has a sizable life lead because it's clearly a
no-win scenario.
Weirdly enough, after all the matches I've played against Manase thus far,
never once has this been an issue *lol*

With a timer, you'd be able to do the same thing, so I'm not exactly sure what
your point is? Yu Yu is actually very dynamic, especially when you start using
the clash system. Matches are very fast-paced if the game is played properly.
As for plane-switching, it's not even required in 1 v 1 (which is what Manase
and I were discussing the relevance of for meta purposes) as you can backdash
through everything. It functions similarly to a KOF roll.
Plane-switching kills momentum and neutral in 1 v 1; it would probably be
better suited to 4 player/tag team battles. Backdash allows you to punish moves
with long recovery frames by just being at the right range with your back
turned. Not that hard to do. You can't run forever in Yu Yu (unless you use
plane-switching in 1 v 1 which, as I've already mentioned, does nothing for the
game's neutral) as throws are kuk strong and jumps are floaty as fuck. If you
have a good ground game in Yu Yu, that's half the battle won.

GG sap.
The game is not dynamic, because you can win and run away and you can be low
health and run away, a game may or may not last forever, a game can never end
then, you can constantly plane switch, run away, GG. worst game ever.
