Everything.
The problems are that not only is the tracking is automated, they are embedding
spyware and backdoors into hardware. Have you seen the Snowden documentary
(Citizenfour)? He refuses to use even standard phones because the NSA has
gotten manufacturers to include spying devices that work even when you aren't
using the phone (they provide them to hotels etc). They've stolen encryption
keys from manufacturers and impersonate Security Authorities. They have custom
firmware for harddrives that can hide applications and are undetectable (the OS
doesn't know it's there because the firmware tells it it's not). Routers and
switches have been compromised everywhere.
So what generally happens is they have deep learning algorithms that flag
certain words and patterns and assign the probability to it. Which makes
things even worse for the average person. If you *don't* have an online
presence and live in a western country, you're more likely to be screened
because you don't fit the profile of a "normal" person.
And if you've heard my story about Youtube video recommendations you'll know
how stupid these deep learning algorithms can be.

I seem to remember someone European getting stopped in the US because of FB
posts… okay, I remember the headlines correctly, but the story was a little
different -
http://www.cleveland.com/travel/index.ssf/2015/08/babysitter_versus_the_border_p.html.
Seems she provided them with her phone and they read the messages. That’s the
same as them reading a diary in your possession.
Also wonder how much the US is tracking. Are they really worried about that
time I googled ‘how to weaponise botulism?’ It’s difficult to prove that you
were just interested in the mechanics of a terrorist attack, not actually
performing one.
Your point is interesting. In this day and age where people have 500+ friends
on FB and haven’t met 95% of them, can you really hold their associations
against them?

Me too, but you have to draw the line somewhere. And I agree with Bruce
Schneier that what we are seeing is not Security, but Security theater.
Snooping on Gmail and Facebook doesn't make anyone safer because terrorists
generally don't talk about their plans over email or Facebook.
Furthermore, we live in an age where virtually government has access to your
information. Now the US is considering changing their laws so that you have to
provide them with your Social Media Id's when you enter the country. This
means people are now going to be judged by innocuous connections to others. It
gets even worse now with WhatsApp integration. Ever notice how whenever you
add someone to your contacts list on your phone they automatically appear on
your Suggested Friend's list in Facebook? Now imagine I add someone, who
unbeknownst to me, is involved is some sort of criminal activity in USA. I
land in the US, they ask me to login to my Facebook account (which I do - I've
got nothing to hide), but then they notice on the side of the screen "People
you know - Osama Bin Hitler von Stalinov". All of a sudden I get flagged *for
the rest of my life* and have to undergo a 2 day interrogation about how I know
this person.
This is the kind of world we are headed for.
