Yeah, for a lot of combos adding the extra hits or making the combo look cool
doesn't help anything. Scorpion is case and point. I've added 5 hits to a combo
and not upped the damage. Throwing an uppercut into the middle of a combo ups
the scaling stupidly. Similarly putting BA's lightning cloud near the start of
a combo will kill the damage.

Ares' needs to burn meter for his teleport combos, they look so cool, but do
little damage.

The game itself has the same MK feel to me.
Start combos with heavy hits gets you the damage.
