There's nothing worse for me than knowing exactly what the opponent is going to
do next, trying to counter it, and then still failing. That's what every match
last night against R.Mika felt like. Every time I knew you were going to jump
(especially out of the corner), I tried air-to-air. But in Capcom's infinite
wisdom, they decided to make the hurt-boxes bigger and have then appear fully
extended before the hit-boxes on jumping moves. But obviously not all, because
that would just be too sensible. So the other option is to dash into the
corner (bad), or try to block and hope the game doesn't decide to make you
block both ways on pseudo x-ups which are somehow worse in this game than SFIV,
In SFIV they usually just happen in the corner. In SFV they can happen on in
any position.
Here's what I mean:
Karin's jumping mk (hurtbox appears 1f before the hitbox, hurtbox is bigger)
[Inline image 2]
R.Mika's jumping lk (hit and hurtbox appear at the same time; hit-box is
bigger):

Ah ok. Thanks.
Because i saw people punishing Ryu's dp with crush counter. But i read that
ryu's dp and some other character's move on block still count as active. Making
it crush counter punish. Odd. But i get it now.
So moves with crush counter properties are similar to counter hitting with
other moves. But it just rewards you better.
So could you use crush counter as a wiff punisher for certain normals? or the
active frame is too short for it to "counter"

Well, it does pay to understand a bit about the footsie game. On the surface
this game has a very diluted footsie game compared to past iterations but the
concepts remain the same, and you need to exploit this shift the risk/reward
into your favour with Ken.
At the most basic level, there are 3 parts of the footsie game: Aggressive
poking (Rock), Defensive poking (Paper) and Baiting/Punishing (Scissors).
I pointed this out at the session against GB. It looks like he's playing
footsies, but all he's really doing is using one aspect (defensive poking). In
other words, if the opponent didn't move forward, GB's pokes would never hit.
This is because he is poking at a range where the move will only connect if the
player walks forward.
This gives you 3 options to counter:
- Whiff punish (or V-Skill/Skill into throw/normal as the move recovers)
- Press a higher strength button at the same time (st.hp will cause a crush
counter)
- Walk into that range then jump over the poke (not recommended but will beat
90% of online players)
Against a competent player, this is where the depth comes from. They'll set
you up by utilizing one aspect of the footsie game then suddenly change their
rhythm.

Okay, with his TC1 – the b+mp, b+hp, it seems to be a mission to confirm this
puppy. I’ve been reading on SRK and most of the guys there who were fine with
3rd strike level confirms are okay with it and the rest are getting screwed.
It's just practice. You need to be able to confirm off single hits in this
game. I don't like that it's such a big part of high level play but that's
just how it is.
Anyways, what’s recommended, the st.LP rather than the d.MP?
Do whatever you find is easier. Chances are if you're losing matches, it's not
because of this combo.
Ken's neutral game at footsie range sucks. You can play him at a bit further
away, but his strength comes from high risk, high reward maneuvers. Like many
other characters who don't have strong normals, Ken can't really control the
flow. So he has to impose his will by making hard reads and taking risks.
You'll find that you will probably have more success with dashing in and out of
range and then making them guess between crush counter and throw. He becomes
much scarier with V-Trigger because he can use it as an FADC if you make a bad
read on an unsafe normal or even DP.
I don't agree with everything in this vid (up close virtually every character
can do the dash in cr.mp<
http://cr.mp> -> confirm), but it has interesting
ideas about his neutral game.

After something like a cross-up, max damage is d+mp into TC1, then HK tatsu (if
the opponent wasn’t crouching. If they were it sometimes misses, so go for HP
DP).
But what a lot of people (like Momochi) are doing is st.LP into TC1 so that
it’s easier to confirm the combo, and you also have the option for the grab
instead.
Now, I get that at max range the d+MP into TC1 will whiff anyways, so this is
mainly after a really deep jump in or cross up. Anyways, what’s recommended,
the st.LP rather than the d.MP?
Actually I have a boat load of Ken questions, but I suppose most of those would
be answered more easily if I got off my ass and went to a session. My main
issue, since I’ve only really played against Paas is what the hell am I
supposed to use for a neutral game? At most ranges Karen’s normal seem to stuff
me. I’m fine on anti-airing her. I’m getting to terms with some of my
punishment (even if I don’t do it, I know what it is supposed to be), but I
have no idea how to play against her other than simply blocking and punishing
her and letting her control all the flow of the game. That is actually enough
for me to win games, but it seems like a really lousy way to play someone like
Ken.

I backdash to avoid it, although I suppose characters with faster walkspeeds
should have success just walking back. I play Nash exclusively at the moment so
I haven't been able to test this. Yes, neutral jumping is a means of avoiding
it as well, although this is also nothing new compared to previous SFs (people
neutral jumping to punish Bison's scissor kicks at certain ranges, for example).
I use jabs from range to bait certain things. Recovers fast enough for you to
react to jump-ins, dashes or the aforementioned dropkick.
If her only neutral bypassing tool is charged HK and there are ways around it,
there's very little else that she's going to use to close the gap apart from
dashing in or jumping.
