This one deserves ALL CAPS AND THREE EXCLAMATION MARKS! If we reach this goal, we can bring this game to the audience that made the genre what it is in the first place: console gamers! Specifically, we’ll make digital versions for release on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U platforms. (You’ll be given the option to choose any of these instead of the PC version.) *For more details on other goals, check out the Stretch Goal section further down the page, and our handy FAQ at the bottom!* - Mighty No. 9 is an *all-new Japanese side-scrolling action game* that takes the*best aspects of the 8- and 16-bit era classics* you know and love, and*transforms them with modern tech, fresh mechanics, and fan input* into something fresh and amazing! - You play as Beck, the 9th in a line of powerful robots, and the only one not infected by a mysterious computer virus that has caused mechanized creatures the world over to go berserk. *Run, jump, blast, and transform* your way through six stages (or more, via stretch goals) you can tackle in any order you choose,*using weapons and abilities stolen from your enemies* to take down your fellow Mighty Number robots and confront the final evil that threatens the planet! [image: Note: All images on this page are concept art and not actual in-game screens.]Note: All images on this page are concept art and not actual in-game screens. - Every aspect of development—art, level design, music, programming, etc.—is being handled by *veteran Japanese game creators with extensive experience in the genre, and with Mega Man in particular*, all the way up to and including the project’s leader, Keiji Inafune<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keiji_Inafune> himself! Backers will have *unprecedented access to seeing this team at work* through blogs, podcasts, videos, concept art—the works! - *Mighty No. 9 is being developed for the PC* with gamepad support (of course!), and will be made available through Steam and DRM-free digital distribution methods. Other platforms, including home consoles, Mac, and Linux, are a high priority, but only if we can afford them via stretch goals. Should we reach those goals, anyone funding the project will be allowed to choose which version of the game they would like to receive. The estimated release date is spring 2015. - *This project is on Kickstarter so it can involve YOU, the fans!* Not only will this make it possible, through crowdfunding, for us to make the game exactly as we envision it, but it also allows us to bring dedicated fans of this genre together to assist the team in shaping aspects of the game’s design. *We need your help! Let’s make something amazing, and let’s do it together!* So what makes Mighty No. 9—the character as well as the game—different? Simply put: the ability to transform! Of course our hero, Beck, earns new weapons as he defeats each of his fellow Mighty Number boss robots, but more than that,* his body itself can also reconfigure into new shapes, allowing for all kinds of new skills and abilities! * For example, his limbs might become giant magnets, enabling him to walk up walls or rip away enemy shields... Or maybe extendible spring-loaded hands would allow him to activate far-away switches or work as a grappling hook... Or he could have a tank-like body, easily crossing over spikes and pushing objects around the levels... These are just a few possibilities we’re considering (the game is still in the design phase), but you get the idea! *And it’s not only killing bosses that gets Beck new powers.* Taking out other enemies with a certain weapon, or hitting them in their weak spot, can expose one of three types of “xel” (pronounced “cell”) energy Beck can sap (if he’s quick enough), store, and unleash later via his own *Mighty Skills*! Give yourself a double-jump and speed boost for a limited time, unleash a concentrated flurry of powerful punches directly ahead, or set off a blast that hurts everything on the screen! Whatever final form it takes, this system will add depth and strategy to the action, as you choose how to approach and defeat even normal bad guys to best fuel your special powers. Once, you worked together, side-by-side—but now, your fellow Mighty No. robots have lashed out, taking over key strategic locations across the globe and infesting them with their minions. You have no choice: *the other Mighty Numbers...Must. Be. Destroyed!* But it won’t be easy. Although they were originally designed for industrial purposes, the Mighty Numbers have all become fierce warriors, seasoned through seasons in the most popular spectator sport of the future: robot-on-robot combat in the Battle Colosseo! We can’t reveal everything about the Mighty Numbers just yet (partially because we wouldn’t want to dump it all out at once, and partially because we’re still working on their designs!), but here’s a taste of what we’re aiming for. *Keep checking back for more to be revealed soon*, and study what you see here closely—learning the tactics and weak points of these mechanized monsters will be your only hope of defeating them! [image: Overheard at recess: “Billy Backer says you can trick him into the water to make him freeze himself and he dies instantly!” (Note: Not true. ...We don’t think.)]Overheard at recess: “Billy Backer says you can trick him into the water to make him freeze himself and he dies instantly!” (Note: Not true. ...We don’t think.) [image: “Tommy’s brother heard if you magnet his missile back at him and pause the game right when it hits, he loses all his health down to one!” (Note: Also False. Probably.)]“Tommy’s brother heard if you magnet his missile back at him and pause the game right when it hits, he loses all his health down to one!” (Note: Also False. Probably.) Any game of this scope takes a team—a big team, way too many to highlight here (keep an eye out for an update with more comprehensive staff info)—but here’s a sample of some key personnel for the purposes of this Kickstarter campaign: *That’s where you come in. *As a backer to Mighty No. 9, you will become a member of the Mighty community, and in a way, an extended member of the development team, where *your input—taken in aggregate along with your mighty brothers and sisters—can help shape the game*. How will we get your feedback? Well, for example: *SURVEYS:* Within the first few weeks of a successful Kickstarter campaign, members of the Mighty community can take part in a *survey to help judge their overall priorities*: difficulty balance, length vs. replayability, favorite features of older games and what you hate—things like that. *POLLS:* From time to time,* the team will ask the community to choose between ideas or characters they’ve come up with*. For example, the first poll planned is to choose between several designs to pick the look for Beck’s trusted partner, Call. (That’s right: Beck & Call.) *CONTESTS: *Later on in production, the team will hold *a contest within the Mighty community to design an enemy!* Come up with your coolest or craziest design and a fun way to sell the team and your fellow community members on it, and who knows? *AND ???* These are just a few of the ideas the team has already that all backers will have access to. (At higher pledge levels, more involved but necessarily-limited interactions like beta access and more are likewise possible.) *What form will all the final fan interactions take? Hey, you tell us! *We can’t promise we can do anything you ask for, of course, but we can promise to always be asking, and more importantly, always be listening. That’s what this project is all about! :D *We’re proud to announce we’re working with Humble Bundle<https://www.humblebundle.com/> for digital reward fulfillment and Fangamer <http://www.fangamer.net/> for physical items! *These guys have built a name doing exactly this kind of thing—we trust them, and so can you. Now, on with the rewards! At any reward level, you automatically join our ranks—the few, the proud—the Mighty No. community! Take part in exclusive backer contests, polls, surveys—you name it. Also, once the Kickstarter ends (assuming it’s successful), you’ll be given your own Mighty Number (based on the order we received your pledge, with earlier pledges getting lower numbers, starting at #900) and a secret password to verify your status in the Mighty No. community forum when it launches (estimated late 2013). What does that get you? Well, a cool, unique Mighty No. next to your name on the forums, plus access to awesome, exclusive, backer-only icons. Bragging rights, my friend—it’s all about the bragging rights! In that vein, your name will appear in the backer credits of the game, along with your Mighty Number! This is what it’s all about: You’ll get a code to download a brand-spankin’ new digital copy of Mighty No. 9, available via Steam or DRM-free digital distribution methods (your choice!) and possibly for Mac, Linux, Xbox 360, PS3, or Wii U, should we pass those stretch goals. In any case, we’ll ask all backers to choose which version they’d like before we send them a download code, with the default version being PC. *Note: There will be an in-game option to change the game’s text from English to Japanese. Also, participation in the beta version, should your reward tier include it, is only planned for the Steam PC version.* Ya see, back, WAY back in the olden days, this must be at least...10 years ago now, games came with these things made of dead trees and ink that told you how they worked. Think of them as “paper tutorial levels,” only they smelled good. Anyway, this is NOT that. It’s a digital version of that, though, that’s laid out to look similar to the way instruction manuals used to look in the old 8-bit days, only now you can view it on your tablet or PC or fancy smarty-phone. The Western version and Japanese version will look slightly different from each other (in addition to being in different languages, of course), but both will be similar in style to the typical 8-bit manuals from their respective territories. *Note: All digital documents will be available in PDF format (DRM-free). Backers will be polled and can individually choose to receive the Japanese or Western (English) version; if we don’t hear back, the default version for backers with Japanese shipping addresses will be Japanese, and all others will get the Western version.* The digital version of our awesome chocolate-and-peanut-butter-style combo super-tome! 50% art book (chronicling the design process of Mighty No. 9 from start to finish), 50% strategy guide (showing you all the maps, tips, and secrets to guide you through your adventure), and 100% awesome! Just like the instruction booklet, you can choose either the English-language version (laid out to look similar to the old “Nintendo Power” strategy guide style), or the Japanese version (the same content in Japanese, ‘natch, but laid out differently, and in a smaller size format, just as the Japanese standard guides were and still are made). *Note: All digital documents will be available in PDF format (DRM-free). Backers will be polled and can individually choose to receive the Japanese or Western (English) version; if we don’t hear back, the default version for backers with Japanese shipping addresses will be Japanese, and all others will get the Western version.* This one is pretty straightforward, but that doesn’t make it any less cool: Listen to the mighty tunes of Manami Matsumae and the other Mighty No. 9 soundtrack artists on your favorite listening device! Did you miss the sample track above, under Matsumae's profile? Here's an ambient remix! *Note: We will be offering the soundtrack in both MP3 and FLAC formats (DRM-free) once it’s ready for download.* Sure, as a download title, Mighty No. 9 doesn’t technically NEED a physical box, but then you don’t technically NEED to breathe, do you? ...Well yes, of course you do—just like you NEED this box! Satisfy that inner-collector/old-school-gamer itch by having Mighty No. 9 take its place among the side-scrolling action games of yore on your desk, shelf, or Ocean’s-Eleven-style laser-tripwire-protected display case. This will be shipped to you with the printed instruction manual (see the next entry below) already inside; it won’t have the game in it because you’re getting that via the download code, but hey, put whatever else you want in there. The Western-style box will be patterned after the NES game box dimensions and style, while the Japanese version will be Famicom-esque. *Note: Backers will be polled and can individually choose to receive the Japanese or Western (English) version; if we don’t hear back, the default version for backers with Japanese shipping addresses will be Japanese, and all others will get the Western version. And yes, if you’re wondering, there IS a reward tier that gets you both the Japanese AND Western versions! * An actual, physical, full-color instruction booklet to go along with your actual, physical game box—just like the old days! The Western version and Japanese version of the manual will look slightly different from each other (in addition to being in different languages, of course), but both will be similar in style to the typical 8-bit manuals from their respective territories. * YOU ARE A GOLDEN GOD! Well, at least you are when you play as this golden color variant of Beck that only Kickstarter backers with this reward will have access to. Want a chance to play Mighty No. 9 early? Maybe sniff out a bug or two, help out the development team? Be the first among your friends to try the game when you gain access to the work-in-progress beta version, before the full retail release! *Note: We can only guarantee this reward for PC versions of the game via Steam, ONLY (that second “only” lets you know we are serious here!), no matter what other versions are eventually released.* That’s right—we’ll be making two, separate T-shirt designs to choose from: one aimed at the Western market, and one made for Japan. The exact designs aren’t decided yet, but you can take a look at the art on this page and imagine the possibilities... We’ll be sure to get your shirt size before we send them out, and yes, there IS a backer tier that allows you to get BOTH shirts! *Note: Backers will be polled and can individually choose to receive the Japanese or Western (English) version; if we don’t hear back, the default version for backers with Japanese shipping addresses will be Japanese, and all others will get the Western version.* Congratulations—you’ll get access to a secret, SUPER (in all-caps) exclusive, backer-only transformation for Beck, and whatever power comes with it! It won’t be anything that will affect the game balance, of course, but the guiding principle is “something cool-looking that hardcore fans will appreciate.” *Note: Of course you’ll still get the earlier bit of exclusive in-game content as well, silly!* *ALL NEW REWARD SET!!!! *Boxes? You don’t need no stinking boxes! Or the printed manual, or anything physical -- *you want all your rewards to be digital!* Well, how about this package: your own Mighty Number, forum access, name in the credits and ability to participate in backer-events, the digital version of Mighty No. 9 (of course!), the digital instruction manual and art book/strategy guide (Japanese or English version of each, your choice), the digital official soundtrack, plus both pieces of exclusive in-game content: the Golden Beck variant, plus the special Beck transformation. We heard your cries requesting this option, so here it is! *ALL NEW REWARD SET!!!!* You are a being of pure light and energy, and as such, *you want everything digital! And we mean EVERYTHING digital*: your own Mighty Number, forum access, name in the credits and ability to participate in backer-events, the digital version of Mighty No. 9 (of course!), BOTH the Japanese AND the English versions of the digital instruction manual and BOTH regions’ digital art book/strategy guide, the digital official soundtrack, plus both pieces of exclusive in-game content: the Golden Beck variant, plus the special Beck transformation, aaand (wait for it)...access to the work-in-progress beta version of Mighty No. 9 on Steam, ahead of the full retail release! We added this reward based on user requests, so have at it! An awesome chocolate-and-peanut-butter-style combo art book (chronicling the design process of Mighty No. 9 from start to finish) and strategy guide (showing you all the maps, tips, and secrets to guide you through your adventure), in full, glorious, physical form, just as they used to make ‘em back in the days of yesteryear! As with the instruction manual, you can choose either the English-language version (laid out to look similar to the old “Nintendo Power” strategy guide style), or the Japanese version (the same content in Japanese, ‘natch, but laid out differently, and in a smaller size format, just as the Japanese standard guides were and still are made). *Note: You’ll also receive the digital version of the book in addition to the print version!* The enemies in Mighty No. 9 are deadly...but that doesn’t mean they can’t be adorable! Here you’ll get a cuddly plushie based on one of Beck’s many foes. Which foe, as well as the exact design and dimensions aren’t yet set, since we want it to be whatever iconic “mascot” enemy character comes out of the design process as the game is built. We can tell you our plan is for the plushie to be bigger than a grapefruit, but smaller than a volleyball—so start clearing off that desk or shelf space now! A sweet-as-honey, coffee-table ready, hardcover version of our precious tome of legend, a combination art book (chronicling the design process of Mighty No. 9 from start to finish), and strategy guide (showing you all the maps, tips, and secrets to guide you through your adventure), signed by our fearless leader, Keiji Inafune himself. You’ll get this hardcover book instead of the softcover book, but you’ll still get the digital version as well. *Note: As with the Instruction booklet, you can choose either the English-language version (laid out to look similar to the old “Nintendo Power” strategy guide style), or the Japanese version (the same content in Japanese, ‘natch, but laid out differently, and in a smaller size format, just as the Japanese standard guides were and still are made).* A nice-sized poster (meaning roughly 18” by 24”, or 46cm x 60cm) of all the Mighty No. bosses together. We don’t have the image because all the bosses aren’t final yet, but take a look higher up the page at the ones we do have. ….Right? RIGHT?! You guys, this poster is gonna be fan-freakin’-tastic. No matter which platforms it ends up on, all versions of Mighty No. 9 will have an in-game achievement system (separate from system-level achievements) with all sorts of challenges to test your gaming skills. “Beat a level without jumping” or “beat the game only using this weapon” or maybe “never using this transformation,” that sort of thing. Maybe you’ve got a great idea for one such goal? Or maybe you will after the beta test? The team will work with you over email to come up with a challenge based on your idea (within reason!) to implement into the final game. Not a scan, not a copy, not a reprint—a hand-drawn, guaranteed one-of-a-kind original custom sketch done by Inafune himself, along with his signature! Did we mention this would be unique? We included a sample here so you can get a sense for what this’ll look like; it won’t necessarily be this same design, mind you, but this is the level you can expect: Spoiler alert: Mighty No. 9 will have a closing song that plays as the credits roll. Double spoiler alert: Your voice can be in it! With this reward, you’ll be contacted via email with detailed instructions on what to record and send back to us, so we can work it into the mix of that final credit-roll song. In the grand scheme of things, your time on this planet may be short...but your voice? Your voice shall live forever... Let’s be clear about this one up front: there’s a right way and a wrong way to implement this kind of reward. Our plan is to do it in such a way that you, the very generous backer who donates to this level, can take satisfaction in finding your mug (pixelized into a 2D representation by the game’s artists) and showing it off to your friends and family, without disrupting the experience for anyone else. (For example, one idea is to have little electric-poster displays in the background that show “Wanted” reward posters which cycle through these backers’ faces.) That’s right—help create an honest-to-goodness enemy footsoldier that will appear in Mighty No. 9. Bring your drawings, your ideas, your whatever-you-want to present to the team in an hour-long Skype chat (interpreter provided). Then, after the team has had some time to work up a concept based on your proposal, come back for a second hour-long Skype chat to give your feedback on their design, before it’s finalized and put into the final game! Bear in mind the team might also do this at some point with the community as a whole, but you can ensure your own private session with this reward. Now we’re getting into crazy-collectible territory. Own a part of videogame history with an original piece of hand-drawn concept art for one of the eight Mighty No. Boss robots—nicely framed, with a thanks to your name written on it, along with signatures by the artist and Keiji Inafune (or without—your choice). We’ll ask your preference on which boss you’d prefer, but since the amount of art for any one boss is severely limited, we can’t guarantee which No. you’ll get. Show them who’s the boss with an incredibly rare, roughly 8-inch-tall (20cm) color-cast model of any one of the nine Mighty No. robots (Beck is okay, too), based on their in-game model! That’s right—with this one, you get to choose whichever Mighty No. you want. As you might have heard by now, Mighty No. 9 was first revealed to the world at a panel held by Keiji Inafune during the 2013 Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) in Seattle, WA. Those in attendance had the opportunity to snag an exclusive, individually-numbered t-shirt that branded them an official Mighty Number! There were only 900 of these t-shirts made in total, and we don’t currently have any plans to make more—but even if we should, these are the uber-l337 t-shirts numbered 001 through 008, representing the Mighty No. robots (Inafune himself owns number 009)! You’ll get one of these t-shirts; we can’t guarantee which number, but we will try to distribute them on a first-come-gets-lowest-number system. Looking for an excuse to visit Japan? How about dinner and some great conversation with a fascinating guy who just happens to be one of the world’s most famous game designers? Inafune himself would like to thank you for your incredibly generous donation, as well as talk about Mighty No. 9, games in general, or whatever else might come up as you and he (and a provided interpreter) share dinner and drinks. You’ll need to cover airfare and hotel yourself, but a nice, traditional-style Japanese dinner is on Inafune. If we can make our initial Kickstarter funding goal and nothing more, you can rest assured we are going to deliver a complete and fully satisfying game experience. But given the choice and the necessary funds to make it happen, *we have a whole bunch of “really nice-to-have” ideas for additional content, features, and platforms (!) that would be extra icing on our already delicious “need-to-have” cake!* Of course part of any extra money will go toward making up the budget of the game itself, but if the following funding numbers are reached, we're also excited to offer: $1,200,000: Two More Stages: REACHED! Our initial goal sets the table with six main stages and bosses, plus a final stage leading to the ultimate showdown—but now we can invite Mighty Nos. 7 and 8 to the party, each complete with their own, unique stage! $1,350,000: Mac and Linux Versions: REACHED! Why should Windows users get to hog all the fun? Now we can offer Mighty No. 9 on both Mac and Linux as well! $1,500,000: New Game Plus and Turbo Mode: REACHED! If we pass this goal, we’ll design a New Game Plus mode that allows those who finish the game but are still thirsty for more to carry over certain powers or items from the first play-through for a more challenging “second quest” version of the game. We’ll also work in a Turbo Mode that lets you play through the game at a faster speed for extra challenge. $1,750,000: The Making of Mighty No. 9 Video Documentary: REACHED! Get an in-depth look at the creation of Mighty No. 9—and an unprecedented peek into the typically ultra-secretive Japanese game development industry—with three 30-minute documentary episodes produced by the wizards at 2 Player Productions (the same team behind our pitch video and the amazing Double Fine Adventure documentary <http://youtu.be/TOqPVkmYB6k>)! $2,200,000: PS3/X360/WIIU CONSOLE VERSIONS!!! (You’ll be given the option to choose any of these instead of the PC version.) We’ll be honest: this is a big undertaking, but if the fans feel strongly enough to get funding this high, this is one of the goals Inafune and the entire team is most excited to undertake! Aaand that's all for now. We'll reveal upcoming goals as soon as we've worked out all the details, but for now, let's get this thing on consoles! So please, help spread the word wherever you can, and THANK YOU so much for your support! NEXT GOAL: ? ? ? *We're working out the details of our upcoming stretch goals now. More info here as soon as we have it!* Risks and challengesLearn about accountability on Kickstarter<http://www.kickstarter.com/help/faq/kickstarter%20basics#Acco> We all know game development is inherently unpredictable—delays and unexpected costs being the two most common “known unknowns.” The good news is, in their more than 15 year history, developer Inti Creates have shipped over 30 different games on eight different platforms, and our project lead, Keiji Inafune, has either worked on or overseen 30+ games in this genre alone, as well as having lead one of the biggest Japanese studios, and some of the biggest AAA games ever. So not only do we have extensive experience with running successful game productions in general, but also experience designing, building, and shipping games of this type specifically, with an established track record of being on time and on budget. Another challenge: we are working in two languages here—Japanese and English—with developers and backers on both sides. While we feel this is a huge plus, as it adds appeal and makes our project unique, there’s no denying it also adds unique requirements in terms of communication and workflow. The good news here: We all have experience making and marketing games for BOTH English-speaking and Japanese-speaking audiences, and are taking extra precautions in pre-planning and during development to buffer and budget for things like interpretation, translation time, etc., all to ensure we stay on the same page with our backers and with each other. Finally, what we see as our biggest challenge: properly involving the community. How exactly do you ask for and integrate fan feedback and contributions while keeping a project like this on track in terms of vision, scope, and schedule? This is still something of a wild frontier in the game industry, as it’s only recently that any of us have had the tools to make this feasible. And especially in Japan, where we have honestly lagged behind our Western counterparts in the variety of ways we’ve been able to interact with our fans up until now. We’ve been researching different projects’ approaches—and some of us even have experience from similar experiments in the past—but as far as we can tell, there’s really no one established “right way” to go about it. However! We do think, in this case, even knowing that we don’t know all the answers up front is important: it reminds us we need to listen, to establish methods of ensuring we hear our backers’ choices and feedback, and keeps us more flexible. We are trying to work in a new way with this project that will allow us to show more things earlier than we typically would, while ensuring that everyone seeing it will have the correct context to see it in, and that there will still be plenty of nice surprises in the final product. One aspect we already know to account for is anytime you ask a (hopefully!) large group of people to choose between options, especially when you’re asking some of the most passionate fans in all of gaming, you are going to end up, by necessity, with some portion of them disappointed, and you’re going to hear about it. We know we’re ready for the ride, and even better, we’re excited as hell to take it. The biggest thing we believe we should all keep in mind, both as creators and as backers: we’ll be learning more and more as we go along, so let’s be patient and work together.
