That just depends on the economic model the country is based
on. Sure, blockchains can't replace Fractional Reserve Banking,
but
whether or not that should even exist is a different debate.
There are
already exchanges that allow *individuals* to loan their crypto
at a fixed
rate for a period of time, so what the exchange does is if you
want to loan
300 bitcoin, it checks who is loaning at what at how much for how
long then
it calculates how much you can lend "from the exchange". The
blockchain
also replaces intermediaries and global banks, and it eliminates
the cartel
behaviour we saw in the UK recently where banks were fixing
certain rates.
Those types of things just disappear. Until of course you force
regulation
through artificial entities...

What is going to be interesting for some of these blockchain
things is that if they start acting like banks, the SARB will
need to get
involved. The capital requirements and reporting standards for
banks are
just insane. I don’t see anyone bothering to get a banking
license for a
wallet/e-transaction type thing. Especially if you have
individuals in
control over this. Problem is that if you act like a bank and
quack like a
bank, SARB will start to ask questions – or at least other
regulators will.
Not sure how they’re going to control this though. Interesting
times ahead.
