That just depends on the economic model the country is based on. Sure,
blockchains can't replace Fractional Reserve Banking, but whether or not that
should even exist is a different debate. There are already exchanges that
allow *individuals* to loan their crypto at a fixed rate for a period of time,
so what the exchange does is if you want to loan 300 bitcoin, it checks who is
loaning at what at how much for how long then it calculates how much you can
lend "from the exchange". The blockchain also replaces intermediaries and
global banks, and it eliminates the cartel behaviour we saw in the UK recently
where banks were fixing certain rates. Those types of things just disappear.
Until of course you force regulation through artificial entities...

been going on for years. Guess what? Money laundering using regular money has
been going on for even longer. As long as the money doesn't go through regular
banks it doesn't matter what type of currency is being used. And even then,

You will still need places that cater for home loans, car loans, project
finance, basic credit cards and all that jazz. Even if you were able to start
up a competitor to them, getting the historical data required to model
probability of defaults is not going to happen.
Start off as a Capitec or something like Postbank and just do deposits. Then
move to micro loans to existing customers with enough behavioural data. Then
try a bit more… still nothing like business transactional banking.
What is going to be interesting for some of these blockchain things is that if
they start acting like banks, the SARB will need to get involved. The capital
requirements and reporting standards for banks are just insane. I don’t see
anyone bothering to get a banking license for a wallet/e-transaction type
thing. Especially if you have individuals in control over this. Problem is that
if you act like a bank and quack like a bank, SARB will start to ask questions
– or at least other regulators will. Not sure how they’re going to control this
though. Interesting times ahead.
