Assessing creative work has been a bugaboo for a good long time. In
schools it's the constant refrain: “How can you grade creative writin...
Shakespeare could have meant something completely different.
Yes, and I've made this argument myself dozens of times. However, the
argument stemmed from how Shakespeare *is taught,* not his actual
work. When you look at stuff like this think about how Sherlock Holmes
evaluates evidence and comes to a what is in his mind the most probable (or
the least improbable) conclusion. For example, if Shakespeare's suddenly
uses a very different structure for a particular verse, could it be a
mistake? Was he just being sloppy? That's a possibility. But what could
the new structure imply in context? An indication that the character is
losing their sanity? What does it sound like when spoken out loud (these
were plays, after all)? How often has he made this "mistake" before? Does
this change in structure add in anyway to the story/character/plot etc?
Again, you will never objectively know the truth, but their are clues that
form a picture that is more likely to be interpreted in some ways than
others. And of course sometimes there is intentional ambiguity and the
material is meant to be interpreted in multiple ways. Now, on one level
this may be really clever and take a lot of talent. On the other hand, it
could also be a really stupid thing to do if it does not add anything.
As for art in terms of painting etc, it is *undoubtedly *subjective.
At the most basic level, all you need to consider is the differences in how
some people see colour. This automatically has an impact on some level.
But that's not something even worth considering - it's accepted. Yes, a
lot of modern art is considered to be complete rubbish *in terms of
value, *but not inherently because of the "art" itself (even though
that can often also be considered garbage). If you are simply asking about
how to tell a good/bad artist from someone with good/bad taste, well,
that's impossible, because of the same reasons that we don't have good
models for measuring creativity. We can have some sort of measure of some
of its aspects, but it will never be enough. And often, the "point" of art
is to defy those logic systems of evaluation in the first place (and before
you ask, this does not apply to every form of art).
