In 2005, my employer threatened me with CCMA proceedings because l had given
two weeks notice instead of the obligatory month. Prior to that, my colleagues
and l had never been issued a contract, nor had the terms and conditions of
said contract been communicated to us. I basically told them to go fuck
themselves. Haven't heard from them since.
In 2014, my colleagues and l attended an IT course, the quality of which was so
putrid that we refused to return to the training institution until certain
conditions were met. I wrote a letter to the institution stating what we had
taken issue with, and we even met with the MD to voice our concerns. Needless
to say, we did not return to the institution but the powers that be were not
happy with how things had turned out. A week later, l met with my then manager
for a disciplinary, where l mentioned that my actions regarding the
aforementioned had been in the best interests of the organisation (they had
spent money on a shitty course that reeked of unprofessionalism). The
disciplinary was thrown out.
Long story short: if you're ever in a situation like this, know your rights.
