Nah this time you can "feel" the issues.  It's hard to explain but you'll 
notice it immediately when you play the game.  In the old games the game slows

See those things?  You can hop on them and it gives Sonic a bouncy effect with 
the somersault animation, but it also slows down your movement.  It looks 
pretty cool I guess.  Except there's a section with like 5 different platforms 
with those things.  Why?  It doesn't really add anything.  The platforming in 
these sections is super easy.  So where people see these as cool design 
elements I see it as an unnecessary obstacle to fluent gameplay.

In this section you navigate the poles by swing and avoiding the fans.  The 
fans are on what seems like a global timer.  So invariably you end up waiting 
for a gap unless you plan your run meticulously (or just take damage by hitting 
the spikes).  These parts just don't seem to flow very well. You start to feel 
the "just another platformer" issue.



It's not a big deal by itself, but when you couple that with everything else I 
mentioned you'll start to see what I mean.

Slow down to explore the huge stages.  Find other routes.  The other routes are 
slow.  Why bothering exploring?

Found I review that kinda captures what I mean about the level design:

Mania’s levels are massive, with multiple routes available through each, Sonic 
often needing to double back on himself several times to wiggle through the 
various dangers and obstacles. You might say this is a good thing, that it 
encourages repeat play - and the Special Stage-accessing rings, which take you 
to a Sonic CD-indebted UFO chase to win a Chaos Emerald, are usually well 
hidden enough to need to be found, rather than simply stumbled across.

You might alternatively argue that the design philosophy that led the first 
Sonic game - speedy momentum, platform-transitioning fluidity, and satisfying 
flow, [...] - has been forgotten in Mania’s genesis.

Of course, series stalwarts might point to Sonic 2 as the party responsible for 
messing with that suitably-hued blueprint, those 25 years ago. They might quip 
that Mania is simply another part of the gotta-go-fast (but only at your own 
risk) tradition, where fast-paced progress can only properly be achieved after 
fully learning any given level.

Nevertheless, bombing onward at top speed in Mania, without having an act 
mapped in your mind’s eye already, is usually a sure-fire way to spill rings - 
or worse. And played slower, with emphasis more on exploration than 
acceleration, Sonic becomes Just Another Platformer - and one where a strict 
ten-minutes-per-act time limit prevents you from poking around in every corner 
in a single session.

I guess I'm just more sensitive to these issues.  I mean, I never really cared 
that much for the auto speed tunnels because it happens so frequently.  So you 
just kinda sit there for 10 seconds thinking when you're going to get to play 
again.  Then when you do the momentum break is often so jarring that it makes 
the speed sections feels more like a nuisance than anything else.

I still gave it a 7 point something though.

rather poor level design.  eg.  They'll send you down auto-tunnels/tubes for 10 
seconds only for you to run straight into an obstacle which you had no idea 
about.  This disrupts the flow of the game.  So you think "Oh but now I know 
about this for next time!", right?  Except that if you do this route again you 
miss the 10 other possible routes which probably use the same gimmick..



Also, you'll often find yourself wondering if you should be going left or right 
at certain spots.  It's not very clear.  It also feels very counter-intuitive 
running right for 10 seconds, only to hit a junction and then having to do the 
same thing in the other direction.



Some of the stages are also hella cheap.  I mean, you can do the first part 
with your eyes closed, then in the next zone you're going along your merry way 
and the screen gets flooded with water.  Hmmm.... are you supposed to go up or 
down?  Better guess fast or you drown.  OK, go up.  There's a lake here.  Do 
you jump in or is there a off-screen platform that hasn't arrived yet?  Let's 
jump in.  GGs you drown, but only 30 seconds later because it's literally 
impossible to make it from that point to any spot that has air before time runs 
out.  So what, right?  The problem is it takes you forever to get back to that 
spot because of poor checkpoint placement in some areas, and you get few lives. 
 So you either collect rings and farm lives (kill me nao), or you play Sonic in 
a super slow, cautious manner.



It's not bad at all, but I really do think it's overrated (personally I think 
most of the reviews are by people who didn't really grow up with Sonic/Mario 
etc).  It has some really cool ideas, but I don't agree with many design 
choices that everyone else seems to think are amazing.  Sure, big stages are 
fun, but it's a Sonic game.  You're supposed to be going fast.  And often the 
only way to explore the other parts of the stages are to play the game in a 
non-Sonic way.



Keep in mind that I haven't finished it yet (I'm on the 3rd or 4th act) and 
there are 12.  The game could potentially get much better (or worse), but right 
now I don't really feel a big urge to load it up again.

You essentially want to cheap out on the GPU as  much as possible if you dont 
have enough moola to get as good of base system as possible.



Then you can easily just pop a new GFX card in the machine in 4 years instead 
of upgrading the whole thing.

Skyrim serves a specific purpose in my life. I know the system well enough that
