I follow the Buffet way LB. I'm a value investor. If the price falls because
of external factors (like it did last week) I won't sell. If it drops because
of something inherent to the system, I will. Obviously there's the case of the
price increasing due to external factors too, like speculation. And of course
stuff like fear leading to lack of confidence in the underlying product, but
that's the same with many other investments.
But overall I'm still happy. I "lost" R1.5k yesterday, but I'm still up R4K.
So did I really lose anything, or am I just up R4k? Look at trends, not the

This coin is not minable, but look at the amount of backers it has. Including
the Chinese government. So you don't have to mine this coin. If you believe
in the tech you buy some now and watch it grow. For me personally the only
benefit of mining vs buying directly is that I can sell the hardware for a
profit if I want to stop. Investing a big lump sum is riskier.

If ETH goes POS, that's not great for half of the mining population.
but its gna be great for all other cryptos coz mining difficulty is gna
increase dramatically, which would mean the price will increase too.
I just don't know if the price of ETH will increase. im sceptical.

At a sufficiently small scale, everything is volatile. Crypto moreso than
other areas because:
a) It's new
b) It's based on technology which advances exponentially compared to other
areas.
So you don't look at the volatility. You look at the trend. And for the most
part, the trend is positive.
Yes, ETH crashed to 10c last week... for a few seconds on one exchange. It's
still up over 2000%. If you're looking at short-term gains then you're not
investing - you're gambling.
And for the last time, you're supposed to invest in the underlying asset. With
technologies like Ethereum you are actually investing in the concept of the
Smart-Contract based blockchain. And the more people who adopt the idea
(meaning corporates and hopefully even governments, the less likely the tech is
to fail).

Last year my brother, LB et al built a miner. Cost = R35k. It mined roughly
25 coins a month @ $10 a coin. At the peak of it's mining career it was capable
of mining R60-R80k a month. In other words it would have paid for itself in 2
weeks, and then still be sold for a profit! No stock will give you that return.

Yeah, but the reason people actually do this is with growth in mind. ETH
experienced a growth of 4000% in 6 months. So that $10 a day now turns into 3
Nkandla's by next year.
People are mining coins in the hope that they will increase in a similar
fashion. When I first started mining BTC it was 13c a coin.

Rule 1: Don't listen to LB.
Rule 2: See rule 1.
At the end of the day it's a matter of *investing*. You put up-front resources
and you take into account recurring overhead and also factor in potential cost
recuperation. Then you measure this against expected and potential earnings.
Forget about crypto and all that and just think in terms of investing in a
product or company. eg If I wanted to make money off Dell for example, do I
buy their stock, or do I buy their equipment and resell it for profit.
Similarly, when it comes to crypto, you have to consider whether or not you
want to invest R20k in hardware and mine the coins yourself in the hope that
you can get your return, or do you spend that lump sum on the crypto itself?
If you feel that the crypto will increase in value over time, does it make more
sense to mine it, or just to buy it and sit on it? Or do you buy it then trade
it like forex?
In terms of power consumption it's a bit tricky because we work on a tiered
system eg. If I don't break the 700kh/W barrier (that's a thumbsuck...) I pay
R400 per month. If I go to 701kw/H my costs go to R700+. But in general it's
still profitable otherwise noone would do it. The trick is to find the maximum
efficiency. The brilliant thing about Ethereum mining is that on some cards
you can get about 90% of the performance by using less than half the amount of
electricity. So you sacrifice the amount of coins you can mine, but your costs
are substantially less so you end up profiting more. But you still have to
take into account electricity tiers. If you can push to max power and still
remain in a "low" tier, then it's worthwhile doing so. To put it into
perspective, a 1080TI runs at around 180W-270W while mining. A 1060 runs
between 60W and 120W. The 1080 mines more coins, but the 1060 has a better
profit per W ratio, and it costs 1/3 of the price of the 1080, so you can
expect a faster ROI.
I just bought a kill-a-watt device so I should be able to determine my
electricity usage. But in terms of mining, 3x1060 return about $10-$15 a day.

Gpus are quite robust and mining is better for your gpu than gaming, coz its
steady workflow and not spikes of kuk happening that stresses the gpu.
