You can't be serious Nic. I mean Joburg has Draeka and Dark Prick.

Yeah, I suppose so. I guess if you’re attending this with the expectation
of it being comparable to a properly run fighting game tournament, you’d be
disappointed. In terms of that, my major issues would’ve been:

- Lousy controllers

- Screen lag

- Retarded commentary

- Poor streaming for viewing the finals
Not much else to worry about from the Jhb one. We had chairs and enough
space to play.

What Di said about it being flashy, but in the wrong way is definitely
true. You could tell that this way more about marketing than about a
serious fighting game. Setup looked nice, but to be fair most of us would
rather place in someone’s garage without lag. I think this tourney was very
specifically to promote the game, rather than to select the best serious
player.
I also don’t think they had bothered to figure out what to do with
spectators. If you’re going to very specifically allow people to register
as spectators and then have no idea what to do with them, you’re an idiot.

From my side, I also have a lot of trouble taking MK seriously as a game.
I know how MK9 was supposed to be played at a high level, but that was zero
fun. Hopefully MKX will not go the same way too soon, but I’m pretty sure
it will get there in the end – a small handful of characters who are able
to build meter while spamming relatively safe 50/50 mix-ups all day.

I can understand and appreciate high level play in Tekken and Street
Fighter. I can’t enjoy high level MK9 play. I guess that also forms my
attitude towards to MKX. I like the game. It’s fun. I will play it a lot
against anyone who is willing to play it. I will not take it seriously
though.

Well keep in mind these are the opinions of people who organise and/or
attend fighting game tournaments. Casuals probably enjoyed it.

From what I’m hearing it sounds like there was more negative than
positive about the tourney in CT. Is that right?

I have to wonder what the hell happened in the Durban tournament for them
to have gone so psycho at the CT one. They told us that we were allowed to
trash talk our opponents, but not to go psycho with it or get out of hand,
or they’d let us know. It never happened. Were the people (I mean other
than LB) being dicks, or were the judges being too strict?

Maybe it’s just at the Jhb one people weren’t taking the tournament
seriously and were just there to have fun. Sounds like the CT one was a bit
of mess compared to ours up here.

I'm trying to write positive thing about the tournament...so far,
negative points is over taking the article lolz

My few up side are:
Staff are pretty helpful. I didn't have to wait for my opponent to show
up because he's of somewhere. I didn't feel lost like where i'm suppose to
go for my matches etc.
Free lunch was nice haha
Free tournament XD
Nice to see some kind of investment in a fighting game tournament. It's
quiet "grand" compare to some tournaments i've been. But grand in the wrong
places lolz. Hopefully this will lead to more big tournaments with better
rules, catering for players etc.

Downsides:
Most of what you guys have said.
Controllers were a pain in the ass to the point i just gave up at then
end. Dat Kano...
Screen differences also.
A lot of the problems could've been solved if there held it in a bigger
room. So we didn't have to separate spectators to players. Players didn't
have to stand shoulder to shoulder
Chairs plz. This will also solve tall ass players from blocking the view
to what's happening in the match. Also it would solve the issue of people
crowding the players so closely (so they didn't have to enforce the 1 meter
rule). +older players would suffer less.
I feel like some rules were enforced by parents like not being able to
"make fun" or cheer players...isn't the tournament suppose to be over 18?
then what's the issue? It's not like we're pointing and talking smack to
the random player. We're mostly doing that to our own friends lolz

I think the tournament would've been more hyped if someone who knew about
fighting game was commentating. Not just describing what they see and
repeating that to the audiences...

And play the game so it looks "flashy" instead of doing combos? lolz if
the prize was given for the best "flash" then sure why not...but the prize
is to whoever wins the tournament...

I sold myself as Ryan's P.A. hehe.

I got the mail and cell number of Ronelle, the Ster Kinekor entertainment
rep.
She wants to create some sort of a database for the Cape Town FGC... No,
I'll rephrase, just to be clear... the Cape Town MKX players.
They have an idea to create a team of sorts to participate locally and in
JHB, but it's early days yet.

I spoke to one of the reps from Corex as well, Tiaan. He is just looking
to smack his brand around and willing to dish out merch for it, or at least
that's the idea I got.

Then there's thid other dude, a fellow called Luca. I get an odd vibe
from him, like he smells of money, but it could be that DOTA life he's
promoting. Lol.
Anywaaay, he has a setup in Centuary City packing a fibre connection.
Imagine a stream-ready studio for live gaming. He's thinking of hosting a
series of "Wednesday night fights" for the CPT FGCommunity as well.

I forgot something really important.
Know your competitors, I fail at this too, but getting that detail right
adds a 10% bonus to the matches, because then peeps who know each-other
will hype for their player.

And for the love of all things holy, give those commentators another
screen with the bracket on.
Or a piece of paper... something... anything that can feed them info.
Like, I dunno, being able to react to the stream monsters.
Or just interviews with spectators or players.
Then there wouldn't have been a need for the same repetitive bullshit.
Interaction, information, entertainment.

Good Stuff Di.

I think we missed a lot of the "humble beginnings" guys. Many of the
noobs had that same feeling I had about my gameplay when I was a noob. You
know, that "I'm really godlike where I play" kind of attitude. My 3-0
matches were against guys like this. I could see they were giving it their
all but losing to some really basic stuff.

The "online heroes" in this game were axed quickley, and felt the most
salt. You can see some guys were really dialled in to their online
strategies, and were upset that they didn't do better.

The X-box One crowd were moaning about controller differences, but that's
not whar was getting them killed. The screen differences was the issue,
just ask Di.

I think the TO's did a ok job for the most part, but the sound not being
available for either the players or the stream itself is something that
could have been ironed out.
I think the swiss system is ass, but it did allow folks to play
each-other a lot.
I can see how double elim would have sucked for the noobs in that
respect. That said, I dont see how an elimination type format would have
"taken longer" is a valid excuse.

Standing for the games was kak... even for someone like me who comes from
an arcade life experience. Morever, if you're going to stand, make the
screen head height. Ergonomics ffs.
Everybody was starting to get back issues.
The space between consoles was also an issue to me, and frankly, fuck
headsets. Give me sound from the screen. The venue sounded soulless.

Morever, the room upstairs would have better suited to running the
finals, and was clumsy for spectators. Watching one match every now and
then isn't going to cut it.
In all honesty, if I were running the show I most likely would have run
the entire tournament there.

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to get into gaming journalism which caters for gamers. Would
it be possible if i can gather Intel from everyone's thoughts and feelings
about the tournament in general and how the players did? i'm sure you guys
have a better idea on the fundamentals. But no need to get super in-depth.
Something that a casual gamer could understand. We can also address what
could be changed or improved. Like Swiss Rules. And why Swiss Rules is not
the best for fighting games, etc.

I'm going to submit this to a journalist and hopefully get it published.
This way we can also expose the Fight Game Community in a better light.
Because the journalist that i talked to is also a gamer and he said he
would like to hear more from professional players.

I can cover on my gameplay but will have to rely on other spectators on
others because i didn't view everything. I manage to view some nice games
from GB. He did really well with Kung Jin. Nic played honorably and really
well with Quan. But not sure about the rest. Didn't make enough rounds.

I'm also going to start a blog. So i can manage the blog for CTS if you
guys want.

Thanks everyone :)
