Yup, in this meta you must win the first game with your strongest character to
ensure passage.

In the Grand finals Lumi lost the first match with Sonya against his Kung Jin
which gave Keegan the advantage through out the set.

So it was,

Match 1 Sonya (loss)vs Kung Jin (won)

Match 2 Sonya (won)vs Sub-zero (loss)

Match 3 Scorpion (loss)vs Kung Jin (won)

Match 4 Sonya (won)vs Sub-zero (loss)

Match 5 Scorpion (loss)vs Kung Jin (won)

Not really, you are guaranteed to fight her twice because the loser can still
pick the same character.

The rule only applies if you win the character.

So in a first to 2 you can play with your main twice, win the first, lose the
second match with a secondary then go back to your main and win the last match.

A completely unnecessary meta game added, either way you need to have 2 to 3
very strong characters.
