So far, the video of MKX tells us that we may see Brutalities (Yes!) And that
Jax may still be in the game as well. His portrait is on one of the towers.

Ign also noted that Kitana has a fighting Variation called "mournful" where she
uses Jade's staff.

The movies are a different beast all together. Most of the characters a changed
in that one. It’s not like Asuka from the series
is the same as the movies either.

Hmmm. Okay, I’d forgotten about Rei ignoring Gendo’s orders – or when she gets
infected. Yeah, by then she has developed an independent
 personality.

Mostly the trope seems to be for the robot/synthetic girl thing. Now that I
think about it, I’m also having trouble remembering clear
examples. That’s also because I can’t remember details from a lot of shows.

Cant remember all details clearly lol... used know my eva stuff by heart some
years ago.

You could probably describe Rei as emotionless, unhappy/depressed with low self
worth(Sees herself as a replaceable tool).

For the show she essentially "likes" not feeling miserable :P

Due her low self worth midset the interaction with other humans is important to
her. Also why her early "responses" are related to Gendo and/or his glasses.

Early on its only Gendo but that changes after the Shinji joins and later Asuka
etc.

The lack of her acting out in normal circumstances makes the few times she does
more important. Smiling/Laughing when talking to Gendo, Hitting shinji, her
self sacrifice near the end and defying Gendo. (Im sure there are more but I
havent watched the original
 in ages).

In the beginning it looks like she would simply just follow her order because
they are orders later on she makes her decisions herself.

All of this is much less subtle and clear in the first 2 Rebuild movies.

Cant remember the Alisa stuff clearly :/

Regarding the "trope" in general. I thought that I was familiar with the trope
but now Im struggling to think of characters who can be described by it.

Hmmm. Not sure if we’ll agree on Rei. What exactly do you recall about her
personality? Did she have any likes or dislikes? Did she have any real reason
for
doing anything, I mean other than because Gendo asked her? I suppose you could
consider being subservient a personality type. What exactly were her defining
characteristics – and I don’t mean physical.

Does Alisa wake up with a personality? I don’t remember the storyline well
enough, so I could easily be wrong, but I don’t recall her being anything but a
blank
slate when she woke up. I don’t mean that she lacked all information, just
that she didn’t have any personality.

I might be willing to grant you the Rei thing – there are some points in the
series where she does seem to be getting a personality. I’d say that the
wipes/resets
of her are part of the reason she qualifies though. While the others may start
out with no personality, Rei is continually reset/reborn.

What links them for me is mainly the nature in which they acquire personality –
through almost exclusive interaction with a single male on whom they form an
attachment. Anyways, while examples may differ, you’ll grant this is not a
trope with which you are unfamiliar, right?

For me the idea behind the character is lousy.

Cant agree with that.

Rei's lack of showing emotion is not the same as lacking personality/soul. I
dont think her personality changes much during the show, it just becomes
apparent later once she actually gets to interacts with people besides Gendo.

Her motivations change and they start changing fairly early(before ep 8) in the
show... it doesnt help that she essentially gets killed/replaced/reset during
the show :P

But what she does makes perfect sense considering her personality and
circumstances.

Her personality is a bit more pronounced in the new movies.

I dunno about alisa. From what I can remember of the game storie/cutscenes and
movie she seems to have personality just fine and her own motivations. Her
essentially getting "mind controlled" for certain periods of time doesnt
detract from what she otherwise
 does willingly.

They are both independent characters imo

Only blank slate here is Chi. Its how she was written and she essentially
starts out as a empty canvas.

Rei is a clone created with no soul and no personality. She may be flesh and
blood, but there is no difference between her and a robot.

All of them have personalities in the end, but they don’t start with them.

Also, by the end of Eva, Rei’s hopes and dreams all that junk still don’t
amount to more than what’s been given to her (i.e. Gendo’s plan or Shinji’s
decision).
Chi is purely a product of Hideki. Alisa is just doing what Lars wants, until
she gets the Jin wipe.

None of them exist as independent characters. Sometimes characters in the
stories will assume human motivations or such things, but usually they’re just
lying
 to themselves.

Alisa is a different story in her endings – I mean she seems to be attending
school and actually not just sitting in Lars’ broom closet waiting for him to
get
 home.

Eh...

I dont really see the connections that binds those 3.

Rei & Chi the "emotionless" aspect.

Chi & Alisa are both "young" naive robots.

I think Rei and Alisa have got personalities tho but not really Chi.

Only one of the chars who really fits the trope I think you are describing
would be Chi imo

Ugh. I have a dislike for the trope. She’s the same as Rei in Eva, or Chi in
Chobits. Female characters with no personality. I understand why they’re popular
 – they can in no way ever be threatening or take any decisions which will
negatively impact the people in their lives. They can have no personality flaws
because all they will ever have learned comes from the (usually pathetic) main
character on whom they
are dependent. It’s a pretty insulting phenomenon.

Effectively they’re blow-up dolls who can also clean the house and do laundry.
Character design? What a joke.

It was 'borrowed' from Virtua Fighter.
You can trace these things back to VF2 days.
VF2 - Sega adds characters with 3D axis movement
T2 - Namco follows suit
VF3 - Sega adds undulating stages and a new 'evade' mechanic (Essentially a
sidestep button but multi-purpose). Some stages are also enclosed (have walls).

T3 - Namco also introduces a sidestep mechanic. The walls and undulating stages
first make an appearance in T4.
VF5 - Sega introduces a B! mechanic.
T6 - Namco introduces a B! mechanic.
If you follow the chronology of these releases, you will see that Namco would
typically release a new Tekken a year (sometimes more) or so after the release
of a new Virtua Fighter.
