RTD releases statement regarding restoration of R Line service
The agency aims for return to full service to the light rail line in December
DENVER (Nov. 7, 2022) – The Regional Transportation District (RTD) is working
to restore full service to a four-mile stretch of R Line light rail service in
Aurora, impacted by a derailment that occurred on Sept. 21. Below is a
statement from RTD General Manager and CEO Debra A. Johnson:
Following the R Line derailment that occurred in Aurora on Wednesday, Sept. 21,
2022, RTD has been working as expeditiously as possible to restore full service
to the impacted four-mile stretch of the R Line corridor from Aurora Metro
Center Station to 13th Avenue Station. I appreciate our customers’ continued
patience as the agency targets a return to full service in the month of
December, though full-service restoration could feasibly occur earlier if
certain procedural milestones are met.
As a component of service restoration efforts, the agency submitted its
investigative report and proposed corrective action plans to the Colorado
Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) on Friday, Nov. 4. That same day, following
a systems redesign of the intersection at Sable Boulevard and Exposition
Avenue, crews safely removed a support pole damaged in the derailment incident
and adjusted the overhead catenary wire system that provides power to light
rail vehicles. Further, RTD staff is working with city of Aurora officials
regarding the intersection’s train-traffic interface and is further
coordinating with the CPUC as part of the safety certification process, which
is in alignment with the federally required Public Transportation Agency Safety
Plan adopted by RTD’s Board of Directors.
When RTD investigates a light rail accident, it stands in the shoes of the
CPUC, as the federally designated light rail state safety oversight agency and
all information compiled, as well as the investigative report, corresponding
documents, and proposed corrective action plans are confidential unless
otherwise ordered by the CPUC.
Additional updates will follow pertaining to service restoration. Thank you, as
RTD continues to strive to make lives better through connections.
