IMO, these problems are (primarily) a function of the limited display on Pocket 
PC (type) devices, along with a more important matter.  $$.  There isn't a 
large enough revenue stream for these problems to be fixed anytime soon.  The 
reason the Mappoint web service costs so much is because (no inside information 
here) they aren't making money yet.  It's a question of selling more and making 
it up on volume.

There are other possibilities.  For example, Pepperwhite Street Map OCX 
component for desktop software development is now available for web development 
as Pepperwhite Internet Map Server.  I haven't used it, but it may be worth a 
look (www.pepperwhite.com<http://www.pepperwhite.com/>).
