The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FMG) is the
largestsocial-science educational and research institution in the Netherlands.
TheFaculty serves around 8,000 students in numerous Bachelor's and
Master'sprogrammes in Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology,
CommunicationScience, Psychology, Social Geography, International Development
Studies andEducational Sciences. The academic staff is employed in education as
well asresearch. There are over 1,100 employees at the Faculty, located in a
number ofbuildings in the centre of Amsterdam.TheDepartment of Anthropology is
one of the Departments in the FMG. Research andeducation are carried out by
special institutes. The College of Social Sciences(CSS) and the Graduate School
for the Social Sciences (GSSS) are responsiblefor the undergraduate and
graduate teaching programmes in the social sciences.Research takes place under
the aegis of the Amsterdam Institute for SocialScience Research (AISSR), a
multidisciplinary research institute, the biggestone of its kind in the
Netherlands and possibly in Europe. The broad scope andpluralism of our
education and research programmes are inspired by and reflecta strong degree of
internationalisation.The Department of Anthropology hasan opening for a Chair
in Social Anthropology, which is located in the AISSR program group:Moving

10.Job / Project Description
The chair in SocialAnthropology is located within the Department of
Anthropology and performs akey role within the Program Group “Moving Matters:
People, Goods, Power andIdeas”. The successful candidate willpursue innovative
ethnographically based andtheoretically orientedresearch into one or more of
the following fields: contemporary and/orsocio-historical processes of
inequality, conflict and protest, gender, raceand class dynamics, mobility and
political economy.Geographical area of specializationis open but some
preference will be given to candidates working on Asia and/orthe Global South.
Candidates’ workshould demonstrate the importance of Asia and/or theGlobal
South for anthropological theory. The holder of the position will beresponsible
for teaching in general social anthropology, ethnographic
methods,comparative-historical approaches, and critical development theory. The
holderof the position will share responsibility for the Moving Matters research
groupwithin the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR). Tasks
- Play a pivotal role in consolidatingthe longstanding expertise at the
University of Amsterdam in the study ofinequality and bringing a
comparative-historical approach to the teaching andresearch of the Anthropology
department, especially within the PG MovingMatters of the AISSR;
- Stimulate and lead the study ofinequality in the context of the Global
South within teaching and research at anational and international level;
- Acquire and help acquire externalfunding for research;
- Actively contribute to thedevelopment of anthropology by publishing widely
and by participating innational and international research networks and
educational initiatives;
- Carry out administrative tasks inthe Department of Anthropology, the AISSR
and interdisciplinary centres,teaching programs, etc.
11.Requirements
Applicantswill have thefollowing credentials:
- A PhD inAnthropology or cognate disciplines.
- Strong generalknowledge of the fields of social anthropology and of
comparative-historical approaches;
- Knowledge andexperience in leading research projects and teams;
- A commitment tothe research agenda of the AISSR in general and the Moving
Matters ProgramGroup in particular, and to enhance interdisciplinary
collaborations withcounterparts in other departments;
- An outstandingtrack record of empirical research on themes relevant to the
research andteaching profile of the Moving Matters group, as evidenced by a
strongpublication record in international peer reviewed journals and/or
bookspublished by internationally recognized press;
- Extensive researchexperience preferably in the Global South and Asia;
- A demonstratedability to acquire significant research funding from
external sources;
- A thorough masteryof ethnographic and comparative-historical research
methods;
- A proven record ofhigh-quality teaching at the Bachelor's, Master's and
PhD levels, and acommitment to teaching general and specialized courses in the
Bachelor's andMaster's programs in Anthropology and in the interdisciplinary
Research MasterSocial Sciences;
- A track record ofadministration and a commitment to carrying out
administrative tasks;
- Adequate knowledgeof Dutch, or the willingness to acquire working fluency
of Dutch within fiveyears;
- A track record ofparticipation in public debates relating to inequality in
the Global South;
- A Dutch BasicHigher Education Teaching Qualification (or foreign
equivalent), or a willingnessto acquire this qualification soon after
appointment.

€ 5.219 to € 9.174 (scale H2/1) gross per month, inconformity with the
