EDITORS WELCOME
I hope this edition finds each and every one of you in perfect health with a
peaceful mind.
Another bowling season is coming to an end. I hope everyone has had a great
time on the lanes this season. I hope you bowled your best game ever. If you
did not, there is always next season!
This season like so many others is ending with the loss of a few great members,
so remember to embrace the friendships you have built and continuously tell
others how much you like/love and appreciate them.
I hope you find this edition of The Blind Bowler informative and
entertaining. Happy Reading!

WORDS FROM THE PRESIDENT
How do I say thank you?
When I decided to run for President of ABBA I said I was about the people and
that is what I meant! During the last two years, Ive had to really learn what
is important to address and when to leave things alone. Some would say I had to
humble myself
you see Im a micromanager. I believe in knowing what is going
on in an organization which I have been elected to manage, but I learned that
there are many knowledgable and talented people in this organization.
ABBA has long needed new blood to work with some of the committees that make
important decisions. As President, I was able to get some new faces, but we
still need more member involvement, and Ive run out of time as President!
However, I promise as a member of the Past President Committee, I will do
whatever it takes to help bring more new blood into our organization; starting
with contacting visually impaired organizations in cities where we will be
attending conventions, as well in our major membership cities, to recruit
bowlers for leagues. So tell your secretary to look out for my communications.
Now back to my original question
how do I say thank you? To answer that
question I simply say, thank you to everyone for all of your assistance and
resistance. Thank you for your advice, your encouragement, and your faith for
the last two years.
I hope to see all of you in Phoenix for the convention in May, so I can thank
you all in person.
~Robert R. McDonald, ABBA President~
FROM THE DESK OF THE SECRETARY/TREASURER
Well, folks it is about time to start packing for our Association, State and
the National Tournaments. For those of you who have experienced tons of snow,
rain, 60mph winds which caused power outages, or other weather conditions and
survived, we will see some of you soon.
On a very sad note, I received two shocks in a day. I was told to pray for Tom
Markle and some hours later was informed he had passed. For those who do not
remember Tom, he was a constant helper for Past Tournament Director, Judy
Mandelkow, a long time member of ABBA and Chicago Braille Center. He attended
all Midwest and National Tournaments, and could be found at these tournaments
sitting at the bar with fellow bowlers having a couple of beers. He was
basically a quiet man unless something truly bothered him. He was soft spoken,
friendly, and kind. He was always helpful to me and did not see the color of
my face but took me in as a dear friend. Tom took a very bad fall at the Mid
year in Arizona, and I do not think he truly recovered from the injuries
sustained. I will constantly look for Tom at tournaments as I still look for
Judy. I will miss him something terribly, he was a true friend.
ABBA, time waits for no one, and believers know, we must do all the good we can
while we can, tomorrow is never promised to us. Some of ABBAs greatest are no
longer physically with us, so we need to try and show more love to those with
us. My Sunday School lesson for this quarter lets us know, if you do not have
God within you you cannot love because God is love. I do not apologize to those
who do not believe in God for my statement. In the end, every knee shall bow
and every tongue will confess. Rest in Peace Tom, gone but not or never will be
forgotten.
As one of our Life Members, James Benton, stated when informed another member
had left us, Kenny Bennett, Indianapolis Blind Bowling League, James said
another piece of the fabric has been removed. Rest In Peace Kenny.
Let us also remember Irene Hanraham, a former member of the Chicago Braille
Center and the Chicago South Bowling League, who left us on March 8, 2017.
Life Member, Wally Burmeister has donate $200 to the General Fund in her memory.
YOU ARE REMINDED:
League secretaries must file the 990 EZ form with the IRS each year. If this is
not done, the league is removed from the list of ABBA leagues covered by the
nonprofit status. Leagues not covered under the 501c3 status do not have to
follow this procedure. (Please note, the IRS has sent the annual form with all
of our subordinates, if you did not file a 990 EZ form, you have been dropped
from the list along with those who are no longer members.) We must become
stricter as it relates to the activities of our subordinates along with
requiring leagues under our umbrella to produce documentation that they have
filed the 990 EZ or correct IRS paperwork or the league will be removed from
our list. Below is a list of leagues the IRS lists as our Subordinates; note,

I can only list that which is sent and the above had been received by March 10,
2017 in order to be published in this edition of The Blind Bowler.
Thanks to the secretaries who sent correct and legible forms on time. For
those members who were patient and kind when contacting me for information,
and those who have given me encouraging words, I will continue to try and help
when possible.
Thanks to Belinda Steele, John Mavis and Robert Kenz for sending the rails and
awards. Realizing that members/non members sometimes become upset because
they did not get their awards or stated they had not received their awards,
Belinda has sent some out again, sometimes three times to the same league.
John and Robert sent rails out almost the same day I sent in the order. There
is a lot of work that goes on in the background to make sure that you get what
you need when you need it, be it rails, awards or just information. Again,
thanks for your patience.
Thanks to all ABBA members because of your continue support, and for speaking
kindly of your ABBA association.

NATIONAL TOURNAMENT NEWS (Reprint)
Hi everyone, this is AJ Inglesby! I just wanted to keep everyone updated about
Phoenix, Arizona; thats right our 70th Anniversary. You can contact the Crown
Plaza Phoenix airport right now and make your reservations (see contact
information in the secretary/treasurer article above). Room rates are $99 per
night plus tax. The bowling alley is very excited to host a tournament. The
tournament committee is working on some great things for people to do in
Phoenix. You can go to Scottsdale to shop or go to the local casino. You can
visit the International Museum of Musical Instruments or the National Native
American Museum, which you can get to by riding the light rail from the hotel.
If you do not feel comfortable taking the light rail you can contact the
paratransit system in Phoenix and get your paratransit transferred to Phoenix,
so you can use their paratransit system. Do not take a taxi from the airport to
the hotel. The hotel offers a free shuttle from the airport to the hotel or you
can take the light rail from the airport to the hotel. Again, do not take a
taxi from the airport to the hotel. Lastly, a tour company called AZ Brew Tour
is offering public tours for our members. You can contact them directly to
choose what to wear and the time you want to participate. You also can go to
their websitewww.azbrew.com to get more information about this company or to
book your tour. A personal public tour is $99 per person, which includes a
roundtrip ride to and from the hotel, stops at three different breweries in the
greater Phoenix area, where you will sample anywhere from 4 to 6 beers plus a
meal at the second brewery. This tour is approximately 4 1/2 to 5 hours.
I hope to see everyone in Phoenix in May.

FROM THE DESK OF THE PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE
We are swiftly approaching another National Tournament which will be held in
Phoenix, Arizona. I hope to see all of y'all!
Though we seem to be maintaining our a membership base of around 900 members, I
am sadden because each year we seem to lose as many as we gain. ABBA members,
I need you to help promote our organization. I take pride in how many
enjoyable moments that the ABBA has provided for many visually impaired bowlers
and their friends and
families. I am only asking that you join me and continue to say positive
things about your organization. If you feel it has lost some of its zeal, by
all means, join in with us who wish to make it the best going forward and get
involved. We are always looking for new talent. We want you to be on
committees, run for official positions, recommend
improvements, and vote. In short, it is your organization and only you can
make it better!
Oh and by the way, this year we are featuring a raffle that can provide you a
free trip. Our stimulus raffle is paying $2500, $2000, $1500, $1000, and $500.
I'll bet you can use that, I know I can! Just the other day I was speaking
with one of our greatest cheerleaders, Janice Erkilla, and she said, "Wilbert
in Minnesota, we are encouraging each team in our league to buy a ticket as a
team. So if your team has 4
bowlers on it, you can split one of the prizes mentioned above for just
$12.50. What a deal! If you need tickets, call me at 216-212-4959. I can't
wait to here from you. Thanks!
See you in Phoenix!

PUT ON YOUR DANCING SHOES
Dust off your dancing shoes & bring them with you to
Phoenix, AZ! At our Saturday night dance during this years tournament, the
Tournament Committee will be holding a Seven-Decades Dance Contest!
Since we will be celebrating our 70th ABBA Tournament, we will be featuring
music from the last 70 years!
For our dance contest, our DJ will play 7 songs 1 from each decade, beginning
with the 1940s. During the first song from the 40s our panel of judges will
select 7 couples to continue on & those 7 will dance to 1 song from the 50s,
where the judges will then eliminate 1 couple. They will continue to eliminate
1 couple during each song so that when we get to the 7th decade, our last 2
couples will dance it out for a cash or gift card prize.
Only the DJ will know which songs will be played, so we wont know what type of
music to practice to ahead of time. Come & join the fun!

CLOSING WORDS
It has been a pleasure organizing The Blind Bowler for the last two years.
Your words have made me laugh and cry, and some articles have caused me to use
a few choice words. Unfortunately, this will be the last edition that I edit,
because I am now working a very important but demanding job. Thank you for all
